Dr. Oz on Incest: More Than First Cousin? 'Not a Big Problem.'
It's incredible that this man really thought he should run for office after publicly weighing in on people "smashing" their cousins, among other things.

The problem with being a celebrity before you enter politics is that youve definitely already said too much. And considering that Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Republican nominee for the Pennsylvania Senate, has already been saying too much as a candidate, you know the things coming out of his mouth must have been pretty bad before.
In an interview with morning radio show The Breakfast Club in February 2014, host Angela Yee asked Oz to weigh in on a question sent in by a listener about someone struggling with an incestuous relationship.
Im going to ask you this and you tell me if this is safe for this person, okay? Yee prompted Oz. Well, he said, Yee, I cant stop smashing my cousin. That means sleeping with. (Thank you, Yee.)
She continued to read out the question: We hooked up at a young age and now in our 20s, she still wants it. No matter how much I want to stop, I always give it to her. Help me. What advice would you give that person?
Hm. I might refer them to counseling about how to rebuild proper familial relationships and set boundaries. But Oz took it in a different direction:
Oz: If youre more than a first cousin away, its not a big problem.
Yee: Okay, so second cousin is fine to smash.
Charlamagne: Its so funny, cause I knew that.
DJ Envy: How did you know that?
Charlamagne: Cause Im from the country! Third cousins?
Oz: Yeah. Its fine.

(33,643 posts)AFA cousin sex goes, as long as it's consensual and age-appropriate, who cares? Not me, not my business, I am not the moral arbiter of other people's sex lives. Even 1st cousins mating for one generation is unlikely to cause problems in the young, it's only when it happens generation over generation, let alone 2nd cousin which has almost no risk in that regard. And obviously pregnancy is not a given when sex happens.
The daughter part though is just ... really fucking creepy and weird.

(115,661 posts)His daughters don't want to have sex with him because they don't like his smell? Might there also be other reasons? Did he ever ask them why? It's creepy that he even thinks those things.

HOW WOULD HE KNOW THAT HIS DAUGHTERS DON'T WANT TO HAVE SEX WITH HIM? WHY WOULD HE EVEN KNOW THIS?!

(1,048 posts)He said fathers put out phermones which daughters don't like the smell of. He did say his daughters don't like how he smells, implying this is because of those phermones. He didn't however suggest they'd otherwise be having sex--that leap was in the minds of his detractors. When I listened to the interview I was surprised not to find the statements either Brian Tyler Cohen or Meidas Touch inferred from his interview.
It's weird enough that he said what he said, but let's not make it more than it is. He was talking in the context of claiming there is some biology that helps people not want to have sex with people whose gene pools are too close to theirs. It sounds odd, but it's in a whole different league than Trump talking about being turned on by his daughter.
The guy is goofy and out of touch enough that we don't need to exaggerate or make things up to beat him. if we do, it will backfire. Fetterman has been doing just fine with real stuff, with NJ, houses, and crudite.

The daughter thing is super creepy and crazy though. I mean I hate the guy and everything, just the second cousin headline seems like a nothing burger.

(10,132 posts)Queen Victoria of the UK married her first cousin, and several of her children married their first cousins, and look how that turned out. Uh,wait...
Actually, first cousin marriage was not uncommon in the 1800s. Charles Darwin married his first cousin, and a first-cousin marriage is planned in the novel "Jane Eyre". Probably because until the mid-1800s people didn't travel much, and eventually they ran out of non-relatives in their village.

(21,424 posts)among all the classes.
Among royals and nobles, it was because they usually (with a few exceptions) married only within their own class and rank. Also, to keep property in the family.
Among some people in the lower classes, who owned plots of their own land (e.g. yeoman farmers), it was to preserve land ownership in the family and avoid splitting it up through inheritance.
In small villages where people seldom travelled, except maybe to the next village over, everyone was related within a few generations.
Them was pretty much true for most of Europe (and early America), not just in Britain.
Edward III of England had several children whose descendants intermarried often. When they fought each other over succession to the throne in the Wars of the Roses, they were also referred to as the Cousins' Wars.
