A document describing a foreign governments military defenses, including its nuclear capabilities, was found by FBI agents who searched former president Donald Trumps Mar-a-Lago residence and private club last month, according to people familiar with the matter, underscoring concerns among U.S. intelligence officials about classified material stashed in the Florida property.
Some of the seized documents detail top-secret U.S. operations so closely guarded that many senior national security officials are kept in the dark about them. Only the president, some members of his Cabinet or a near-Cabinet-level official could authorize other government officials to know details of these special-access programs, according to people familiar with the search, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive details of an ongoing investigation.
Documents about such highly classified operations require special clearances on a need-to-know basis, not just top-secret clearance. Some special-access programs can have as few as a couple dozen government personnel authorized to know of an operations existence. Records that deal with such programs are kept under lock and key, almost always in a secure compartmented information facility, with a designated control officer to keep careful tabs on their location.
But such documents were stored at Mar-a-Lago, with uncertain security, more than 18 months after Trump left the White House.
After months of trying, according to government court filings, the FBI has recovered more than 300 classified documents from Mar-a-Lago this year: 184 in a set of 15 boxes sent to the National Archives and Records Administration in January, 38 more handed over by a Trump lawyer to investigators in June, and more than 100 additional documents unearthed in a court-approved search on Aug. 8.

Wonder who leaked this?

(51,031 posts)Someone from DOJ leaked to get it out in the media that there was really seriously sensitive documents stolen by trump. Things that they couldn't come up with a reason (library, memoir) why trump would have it..... Then they indict trump and whoever gave him access to this intel, doing an end-run around Cannon and her Special Master insanity.

In Trumps final hours in office, he pardoned the Israeli state operative who recruited convicted American spy for Israel Jonathan Pollard. The DOJ signed off on the release of Pollard, who then fled to Israel on the private plane of Trump megadonor Sheldon Adelson.

The convicted spy Pollard was greeted at the airport by Netanyahu, a lifelong close friend of the Trump and Kushner families. That relationship is described here:

(35,950 posts)hustled Pollard over to Netanyahu. Adelson was the Zionist billionaire in chief for Israel in America. By the time he died he'd probably already bequeathed billions to Israel, along with the aircraft and some of Trump's classified intel to Israel.

She also shared her husband's passion for Republican candidates in the US and for politics in her native Israel. The pair, who met on a blind date set up by one of Miriam's friends, were the single largest contributors to US politicians last year, giving some US$215 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
In some respects, Miriam has been as active as Sheldon on the political front. Alongside her husband, she successfully championed US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. President Donald Trump awarded her the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award, in 2018.

(35,950 posts)When he was alive, Adelson gave Trump's campaigns many millions, and so of course Jerusalem and a US embassy there. The Adelson team likely made sure that Pollard didn't get to Israel empty handed, either. Mossad's probably given him a complete body/face makeover and heading up some ops.

(14,124 posts)... documents were declassified long ago. That the FBI were being vindictive when Mar-a-Lago was ransacked and swat teamed while he and the family were out of town.
I don't blame the DOJ and the FBI for trying to set the record straight and countering the lies upon lies being spread by tRump and his minions.
The only way the government can really defend themselves from the preposterous lies told by team tRump, is to release factual information. And the limited way to get the truthful info out is backdoor press releases, (ie - media leaks).
They are being forced to leak info to counter the overwhelming fire hose of relentless layers of tRump lies and wild inaccuracies specifically designed to confuse reality and enhance tRump's case.
tRump is forcing the government to correct the record and information leaks is one of the few avenues available to them to communicate the truth and cause the outrageous lies to be disregarded as disinformation.
tRump loves to muddy the waters,.. turn reality upside down,.. and confuse matters to give people a splitting headache. This way folks quickly gather their things and run for the nearest exit to get away from this flim flam conman. This is all by intention and by design - it permits tRump to walk away scot free. Not suffering any
repercussions for his fraudulent conduct and/or criminality. Then he quickly moves on to his next con job and new scam he cooked up to rip his next victim off.
Snow job,.. rinse,.. repeat.

Seriously, there are only two options here:
1. These documents relate an enemys missile defense and nuclear capabilities. If that gets out, a good hostile intelligence agency would almost certainly be able to figure out at least some of our sources and methods.

2. These relate to an ally.
I dont even need to explain how much of a shitshow *that* would be.
In either scenario, theres no non-nefarious reason for Trump to have hidden this material from investigators.

(21,264 posts)Wouldn't Russia want to know what we know about its nuclear capabilities?
The Washington Post reported about these nuclear documents a month ago. I posted about them numerous times asking for Trump to be arrested. The documents were listed in the search warrant, S-FRD.
Nevilledog
(51,031 posts)Just because they had S-FRD (Formerly restricted data) on the search warrant does not indicate they were certain those docs would be found at Mar-a-Lago. S-FRD designation was listed with many other types of classifications they were looking for.
Of course, there may be info in the redacted affidavit that says a witness saw nuclear documents. For all we know, there could be more nuclear documents they know were taken at other properties, or he could have sold and transferred the originals.
The designation on the search warrant was for domestic not foreign nuclear intelligence.
https://www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/hss/Classification/docs/CTI-Training-RD-FRD-Briefing.pdf
I don't have a security clearance, but I've personally dealt with hundreds of search warrants.
gab13by13
(21,264 posts)he circled S-FRD with a yellow marker.
Nevilledog
(51,031 posts)Seems to me most of the discussion when the S-FRD designation came up was how Trump's bullshit *declassification fairy* story wouldn't apply to nuclear docs.
Certainly there was also talk about how bad having any nuclear docs would be.

(6,462 posts)If this goes viral, maybe that stupid Judge will read it, and, you know, "feel bad" about her ruling. I only hope that the Gov. appeals, gets a patriotic Judge, one who can apply the law, and then maybe writes a scathing opinion of the ruling she did.
Trump is evil. It wasn't just about him. It was about all of us and the peril we face in an uncertain world. And he is/was willing to sell us down the river. Boy, I will not shed a tear if he were to drop dead from eating cheeseburgers.
Who thinks that you could put classified docs into a "Presidential Library?" For the public to view?? Well, that one won't fly, either.
