Is Quiet Quitting Real?

Gallup

"Quiet quitters" make up at least 50% of the U.S. workforce -- probably more, Gallup finds.

The trend toward quiet quitting -- the idea spreading virally on social media that millions of people are not going above and beyond at work and just meeting their job description -- could get worse. This is a problem because most jobs today require some level of extra effort to collaborate with coworkers and meet customer needs.

U.S. employee engagement took another step backward during the second quarter of 2022, with the proportion of engaged workers remaining at 32% but the proportion of actively disengaged increasing to 18%. The ratio of engaged to actively disengaged employees is now 1.8 to 1, the lowest in almost a decade.

The drop in engagement began in the second half of 2021 and was concurrent with the rise in job resignations. Managers, among others, experienced the greatest drop.

The overall decline was especially related to clarity of expectations, opportunities to learn and grow, feeling cared about, and a connection to the organization's mission or purpose -- signaling a growing disconnect between employees and their employers.

I consider myself lucky. I always enjoyed working, from my first paper route, to menial jobs in high school and college, and into my professional life.

I always gave 100%, and I personally think doing that makes the job more fulfilling.

I’m giving retirement the same gun-ho attitude lol!

It’s when companies expect 110, 150% that it becomes unfair. If the workload is high enough so that people have to work above and beyond their paid hours, the company needs to hire more people.

Why should one be expected to make "extra effort?" What is the extra effort? Put it in the job description then. It's a contract.

It's hilarious how the capitalists uses our fears regarding work ethic against us. If we don't appear to "work HARD" then we lack some virtue. And we aren't supposed to get paid for it. We feel we have to have that virtue of hard work, so we let them get free work out of us in order to prove we have it. Ideal conditioning for the capitalist, who saves money on labor.

Read through what the workers are experiencing on this blog. https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/

Especially, look at the experiences of people who are job hunting. Job search, and working has become so brutal and demeaning for so many that they just can't take it anymore. I see it as a hopeful sign people are demanding reform of bad work practices before they will be willing to subject themselves to these conditions.

My own experience looking for part-time work as a retiree confirms what they are saying. Workforce "productivity" consulting firms and technology have made work a living hell of overwork, underpay, and oppressive technology control.

Also, see the work of Nick Hanauer, a billionaire who has been warning that "the pitchforks" are coming if inequality and oppressive labor conditions continue as is. He is a relentless campaigner now for reforming capitalism before it devours the planet.

I completely support the young people who are saying, ENOUGH! Godspeed.
