Watch A Republican Candidate Furiously Backpedal From His Own Words On Abortion

Scott Jensen, Republican candidate for governor in Minnesota, is fleeing from his own position against abortion after his poll numbers took a dive.

“I would try to ban abortion,” Jensen vowed in a March interview with Minnesota Public Radio. In the past, he has also said he would work to ban it without exceptions for rape and incest “unless the mother’s life is in danger.”

Now, with voters outraged over the issue after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Jensen has released a new video insisting abortion is a “protected constitutional right” in the state and “no governor can change that.”

Bury the M-F with it. Virtually the entire GOP has jumped onto the anti-autonomy bandwagon. Their long-sought goal of a rock-ribbed social conservative SCOTUS has been achieved. The results are there for all to see, and the words of Alito and Thomas suggest that much more is in the offing. It's time for payback, and website scrubbing is not going to save their sorry asses.

Backpedal also means to step backwards hastily. A boxer retreating from an attack would backpedal and step to the side to attempt a counter.

Pedals are commonly known as parts of a bicycle connected to the flywheel, which propels the bicycle forward, but before the invention of the bicycle, "pedal" was meant as pertaining to the Foot, as in humans are "bipedal" animals.

I would bet that many Goopers, Trump included, didn't and don't give a solid shit about abortion, and only spouted "right to life" rhetoric to win over the rubes. They worked that con for decades, never imagining that any Supreme Court would be reactionary enough to actually repeal Roe and stick them with any consequences.

Now that it's happened they're stuck with it, along with all the girls and women who will suffer the results of this inhumane cynicism. The punishment--loss of their power--doesn't nearly fit the crime--but the least we can do is make sure these grifting hacks never again attain elected office.

Today, Alliance for a Better Minnesota Action Fund released their first anti-Scott Jensen TV ad of 2022. The spot features three Minnesota women reacting to Jensen in his own words as he threatens to ban abortion in Minnesota if he becomes governor.

“Scott Jensen has repeatedly threatened to ban abortion in Minnesota and even previously said that he wanted to ban abortion without exceptions for rape or incest. His extreme plan would be devastating for Minnesotans who deserve the right to control our own bodies and lives,“ said Marissa Luna, Executive Director of Alliance for a Better Minnesota Action Fund. “Abortion is essential health care. Minnesotans deserve a leader who will reduce barriers to and protect access to safe, legal abortion. Scott Jensen is wrong for Minnesota.”

In addition to the TV ad, Alliance for a Better Minnesota Action Fund released a slate of digital ads illuminating the harm Scott Jensen’s extreme anti-abortion plan would inflict on Minnesotans.

In an MPR interview in March 2022, Scott Jensen said that he would ban abortion in Minnesota without exceptions for rape or incest.

When he says no Governor can change that. Yes the legislature must first pass the measure and with the Governor's signature it is changed.

So it's true, he can't change it; the state constitution would have to be amended, or else enough new state supreme court justices would have to be appointed to overturn that decision, Doe v. Gomez. http://users.soc.umn.edu/~samaha/cases/women%20of%20mn%20v%20gomez.htm This July a state trial court struck down most remaining restrictions on abortions, and the Attorney General, Keith Ellison, decided not to appeal. https://www.minnpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/19-3868_2022-07-11_Order-and-Memorandum_Doe-v-State-MSJ-Final-1.pdf

State constitution was specifically held to protect the right to an abortion in (I think) 1989, and has been upheld by the state supreme court ever since. They tried to amend the state constitution in 2012 to remove the right to an abortion and that effort failed.

Our weak and unresponsive legislature still passed a 15 week ban and our shithead governor still signed it.

If he had a stupidly willing legislature behind him (and assuming he wins), he can stir the pot and create uncertainty until the state supreme court ultimately strikes it down.
