Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, whos the Democratic nominee for governor, exposed a revolting history of sexual abuse and coverups within the states Roman Catholic Church. Bishops and other leaders buried reports of more than 300 priests sexually abusing thousands of children for decades. They pressured victims to remain silent and persuaded law enforcement to look the other way. They were a bunch of scumbags.
However, Catholic League President Bill Donohue wants to haggle over the details. Hes accused Shapiro of smearing the good name of the Catholic Church.
Tuesday, Donohue posted a statement on the Catholic League website titled we shit you not What Josh Shapiro Did To Priests Was Disgraceful. Yes, the priests are the true victims here.
Donohue whines:
Shapiro convinced the media that he found evidence of 301 priests who abused more than 1,000 children over a period of seventy years.
This is thrice false (1) not all the alleged offenders were priests (2) most of the alleged victims were adolescents, not children, and (3) the report was not evidentiaryit was investigativemeaning that the accused priests were never given the opportunity to rebut the charges.
Yes, Donohue contends that not everyone who abused the small towns worth of kids were priests. Maybe some of them were priests in training or interns. THIS DOES NOT MAKE ANYTHING BETTER.
Without access to a lightning bolt, I dont have the best response to so contemptible a statement as most of the alleged victims were adolescents, not children. The bulk of adolescence occurs during literal childhood. This asshole is talking nonsense.

(50,941 posts)Donohue is it. And he's always had a soft spot for pedophile priests. That is what the Catholic League is.
Wonkette should point this out.

(46,893 posts)This is why the Irish basically kicked the Church out of Ireland.
What used to be the most Catholic country in the world, isn't any longer.

(12,646 posts)They certainly aren't adults, buddy. They're dependent on guardians - parents or recognized adults to protect, maintain and guide them to adulthood.
They still can't legally consent to any sexual relationship with an adult, even if someone thinks they "aren't innocent anymore" or have became "damaged goods for the taking" because they've become typical adolescents.
Grown-assed adults know this. Grown-assed adults also know the difference between desires and ethics, and if they are in a position of confidence, they should know the difference between assistance and abuse of other people in their care.

(7,286 posts)technically he is correct. Most of the abuse I knew and later became aware of occurred in high school. In college there were 3 first hand encounters I experienced, but by then I was a teen-aged adult. I would described them as "being hit on" One teacher, one priest and one ex-priest
And yeah, the worst offenders were not priests but lay people (teachers and aides). The worst 2 at our high school school "Frater Jim" was a priest in training and our chemistry teacher, not a priest.
And yeah, the students in HS are adolescent minors. It was a thing you dealt with by avoidance. Never get alone with so and so, dont join the yearbook, decline offers of after school tutoring, etc. We all knew what was going on. It was a "look- the- other- way and stay-out-of-the-way" kinda thing. Our parents were spending tons of money to send us to this "prestigious school" for the ever lasting sake of getting us into a good college. Later, when it hit the news ( Frater Jim still makes headlines, one of his victims committed suicide) I asked my mom about it. Her response: " Oh, we knew they were homosexual, but we didnt think they were practicing on our kids" SMH
They preyed on the weak and the kids they knew were homosexual, which with 400 boys the predators knew how to pick them out. The "grooming" the priests did. They would try and recruit some of their victims to join the priesthood, thats how the abuse kept occurring like a circle game

No excuses, these priests should be held legally liable and be appropriately sentenced.

(20,653 posts)I said after decades of systematic abuse, they blame the one who caught them. I also said I hope the hell they believe in is real, because they're going there.
It'll make their day, I'm sure.
