(13,780 posts)... if I search for "Queen Elizabeth" there's an NPR and a Wapo story from around the time of the Guardian. But you have to search and they're not at the top.

Isn't it a little past time to demote the monarchy?

(9,822 posts)Do you like the new Tory PM, who wants to be another Thatcher?
Now theres a Monarch whos talked for decades about climate change and about protecting the earth, and he can meet with Truss and remind her who is her King.
Its worth a try.

"The passing of the second Elizabethan Age."

(25,959 posts)While posting my dismay at the Queen's impending death, I made a comment earlier today that included a fairly bland expression of dismissal about royalty in principle. After some thought, and a little embarrassment, I went back and removed it because today is not the day.
It's unsettling to be upset about the passing of a complete stranger, but Queen Elizabeth was a known constant in all of our lives for such a long time that it is painful to see her go. As for Charles, I wish him well, with a healthy heaping of excellent advisors going forward.

(364 posts)The slightest hint of deviation from a constitutional monarchy whose powers are in practice carried out by government ministers who are themselves elected Members of Parliament would create a massive constitutional crisis.
The Queens reported behind-the-scenes strong nudging of Johnson is the exception that proves the rule; HE was the one creating a constitutional crisis.

(9,822 posts)to lead the world in thought, regarding the existential crisis humans now face.
The Monarchs of Great Britain, having arguably played an outsized role in the pressure put onto the earth by people, could now be redeemed by the first King to understand whats at stake.

(81,192 posts)She was Queen before I was born, too. Crowned shortly after, but the scepter passed the year before when her father died.

was boxing her out. She was like 93 and he could not care less where she was or how she was doing. And she was so polite about it.

Charles and Camilla will be fine. William and Catherine will be there to help.
That is going to be an incredible funeral.

I have been following the Megan and Harry thing and it is really evident that the Brits love the queen. You don't say bad things about the queen.
They are absolutely furious with Harry.

(81,192 posts)Makes me wonder - why do we even care what Harry says? I certainly DO NOT care what Meghan says, either. She has no right to weigh in on anything much. And THANK GOD the hapless Harry is so far down on the line of succession. They could be forgotten right now, for all I care. (Besides, if so, it would absolutely crush and infuriate Meghan - which makes it all more desirable!)
