Whereas, William would breath new life into it.
But man needs his just due, as he sees it, I guess.

(46,489 posts)We lack the basic services and rights of most modern countries.
Health care, education, voting rights, discrimination of women and minorities.
Worker's rights.
Gun violence where 6 yr olds at school and grandmas at church are shot to ribbons.
We tell our citizens not to wear masks or get vaccines during a deadly global pandemic.
We wonder if our democracy is dead.
Half of our US leaders are dangerous sociopaths who wish us dead and want to end democracy.
We elect a known criminal to office who goes on a 4 year crime spree including inciting civil war,
overturning the US government, and stealing/selling national secrets to our enemies.
But we know better than anyone else how to run a country.

(6,786 posts)has nothing to do with us. An opinion is just that an opinion. Most opinions are subjective and of interest only to the opinionater. I saw Prime Minister Truss meet with the queen and she seemed okay with the whole situation. King Charles III will do just fine and so will the British people. My opinion, of course.

(26,046 posts)And has talked before about how he wants to further do that. He will be a great transitional monarch, and imo will save the British monarchy. Abdicating is the worst thing he could do. Charles is breathing new air into the institution.
Camilla is also very well liked over there, and I also very much now like her. She is actually well suited for her role as Queen Consort.

(27,794 posts)I could see a case being made for his staying for 7-10 years and then passing the torch, but I think it's very unfair for Charles not to have his turn. It's wrong to shove people aside who have the experience and seniority for a job.
I really like Boston Bean, but ai think this is a very ageist remark.

(6,786 posts)years to do it. The monarchy has remained fascinating throughout history. Looking forward to the next chapter. Charles is an advocate of modernization and he was an advocate of climate change very early on. I remember when he was derided for his forward thinking views.

(27,794 posts)For those reasons alone, I would like him to be King.
I don't see any compelling reason for William to be King. I have nothing against him, but I don't see that he brings anything to the table except youth. I don't know his issues or interests or causes.

I still don't have any bead on William.

(53,740 posts)and the monarchy to the British public.
Maybe while he's king he should extend olive branches to Harry and Meghan and the rest of family, squash all the bad blood, forbid it, bring the Suxxeses back into the fold.
Get the institution in good shape for the changing future on the nation and it's attitude towards the monarchy. Then after that's done in a few years, turn it over to William.

(46,489 posts)2. Prince William does NOT want to be king now.
He has young children to raise and does not want the big job yet.

(4,170 posts)Funny how even on DU we see ageism. Yesterday I saw a post about how "ugly" he and Camilla are.
Judging people on age and looks...didn't expect to see it here.

(46,489 posts)Seems an odd combination.
I respect the British people and it is their form of government, tradition and history.

(82,383 posts)there has never been any indication that would ever be done. The Queen kept doing the job to 96 and he's only in his 70s. He's the heir and so now he's King. End of story.

(26,046 posts)Unlike, say, the Dutch Monarchs, who will occasionally basically retire. And, except for Unca David the Nazi and Andrew, modern Royals tend to take this seriously.
QEII, KCIII, Queen Camilla, Sophie Wessex, the Princess Royal, and others do an insane amount of work. They live lives of privilege, but they work their asses off, as well.

(5,499 posts)At some level Charles has to hate the whole thing. It prevented him from marrying the woman he loved. It forced him into a marriage he didn't want. I also don't see him being neutral. He has definite opinions. And at some point he might say why are we pretending this means anything?
Torchlight
(3,292 posts)About five years ago, out of the blue, I came across this movie on PBS called King Charles III. A Shakespearian tragedy set in a fictional world where the queen's passing sets off a constitutional crises the likes of which Britain hasn't seen by the new king and written in Shakespearian verse.
Almost every royal is depicted as either incredibly self-serving and evil, or incredibly weak and naive. It's a really compelling drama/tragedy, Othello-level tragedy. And written in verse projected onto characters we think we already know. I found it compelling as hell, especially going into it having zero idea of its existence.

(66,285 posts)We thought it was just going to be a 'what-if' royal story. Then we heard the prologue: An iambic pentameter introductory sonnet in the style of the epilogue from Henry V. By the end of the prologue, we were captivated.

(27,794 posts)Draggy and pointless. They wore out the premise really early on. And the woman who was supposed to be Diana's ghost looked so much like Queen Victoria that it detracted from the production.
The only redeeming thing was that the guy who played Charles was Jimmy from "Desperately Seeking Susan".

(101,265 posts)The "isn't William just dreamy" posts never seem to end on DU. Your title made me expect a properly-argued case for the UK to switch to republicanism, and instead I find it's fanfic, just for the younger model.
