Considered top crust by accident of birth. Privilege as a result of bloodlines. Un-elected positions. They personify things fundamentally wrong with this world.

(115,681 posts)But millions of people who are not Americans and don't give a damn what we think, feel deep affection for the Queen and others in the royal family as national symbols, and it seems to me that we can at least be respectful of that. Anyhow, considering that in this country we have an antiquated and undemocratic election system that permitted the election of a dangerous, autocratic demagogue, maybe we shouldn't be throwing stones from the confines of our very fragile glass house.

(268,952 posts)wherever they exist. You cannot believe in the monarchy and democracy. Either all women and men are created equal or we are not.
Just listening to these assholes speak about who married a commoner and who didn't is enough to make me puke.

(53,410 posts)When he finally has the decency to die we will be hearing about it as much as were hearing about the Queen.
There is much more to admire about Queen Elizabeth II than Trump. She served her country well which is more than he did, even from before she was Queen.
Ocelot II
(115,681 posts)the fact that we don't have one didn't save us from a dangerous, corrupt wanna-be despot with authoritarian tendencies to rival Louis XIV (whose power and palace TFG doubtless envies). What really matters isn't so much how a person acquired their position of power and privilege, but what they do with it.

No need to fawn over anyone based on what they were born into.

(102,234 posts)exactly WHAT the person did with that life, that privilege.
We have many examples of those born to great advantage who still worked to do good with those life benefits--JFK's famous quote (and example) comes to mind: "with privilege goes responsibility."
That said, those whose disdain causes them to ignore this opportunity to learn a bit about the 70-plus years of history that she experienced are really missing an opportunity. One hardly needs to laud ANYONE, much less Royals to know that the discussions of this woman's years captured a birdseye seat on 7 decades of history. Of course, I value learning from history because much of what is happening and puts us at risk today comes as a result of/from those who DO NOT.

said no. IIRC.
It is not just common but expected for princes to serve their countries in the military, and Harrys bedazzled uniform is part royal obligation & heritage and part combat veteran.
Not so much princesses. Given her age and gender, not to mention being the first born, she wasnt slated for combat, but she got axle grease under her nails and learned to maintain and drive military vehicles. (Her sister, by the way, was a Girl Guide, being only 12, or so.)

(58,648 posts)It's a fundamentally evil part of the American character that so many of us yearn for a class of "royals" to venerate. It contributes a lot to our authoritarian strain that leads to assholes like trump rising to positions of power.
I tolerate all the reportage on the passage of QEII, I don't join into it and I generally switch away from the coverage. This is my first comment on it and most likely will be my last.
:bored: with it all.

(118,629 posts)I see it through the eyes of colonies more than they did. They were all about the British Empire as many Canadians were back 100 years ago. When I came back from University after taking an excellent African history course there was tension. But we avoided a direct discussion on it as we did most things. Still I admire this Queen's duty and service and a few things she did like encourage Prime Minister Mulrooney to go all out in being anti-apartheid when Thatcher would not. So she was a good egg. I enjoyed the series the Crown a great deal that being said.

once they get going. You just have to not be sentimental about food.
Beyond that, the Queen has land of her own. She raises sheep around Windsor Castle, and the wool is sold to be spun and woven. Or maybe its processed in mills of her own. I dont remember.
Charles has organic farms hes been big on organics and ecology and saving the Earth his whole adult life, and when people bitch about Charles having controversy and getting involved in political matters, thats a chunk of it.
Evil, I tell you.
