COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) Chief Justice John Roberts on Friday defended the authority of the Supreme Court to interpret the Constitution, saying its role should not be called into question just because people disagree with its decisions.
When asked to reflect on the last year at the court in his first public appearance since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Roberts said he was concerned that lately some critics of the courts controversial decisions have questioned the legitimacy of the court, which he said was a mistake. He did not mention any specific cases or critics by name.
If the court doesnt retain its legitimate function of interpreting the constitution, Im not sure who would take up that mantle. You dont want the political branches telling you what the law is, and you dont want public opinion to be the guide about what the appropriate decision is, Roberts said while being interviewed by two judges from the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals at its conference in Colorado Springs.
...When asked what the public might not know about how the court work, Roberts emphasized the collegiality among the justices and the courts tradition of shaking hands before starting conferences or taking the bench. After the justices might disagree about a decision, everyone eats together in the courts dining room where they talk about everything but work, he said. He said its not borne out of fake affection but a respect that comes from the push and pull of explaining ideas and listening to the responses to them.
um....aren't they called "lawmakers" for a reason? What is that, just a nickname??

(3,687 posts)The power of the Supreme Court to determine constitutionality is not in the Constitution.
Original intent was that Legislature make laws and the courts settle disputes based upon laws.
The Supreme Court is the last appeal, not a veto on the legislature; as much as I have appreciated the court's past liberal decissions.

(21,696 posts)It's because the basis of their decisions is not based on laws and precedents.
The basis of their decisions is political and religious.
They can't even explain the legal reasoning behind their decisions (see Bush v Gore). And if they do explain their reasoning, they have to revert to metaphysical "logic" and imaginary "original intent" concoctions.
There is currently a block of Judges selected for their support of a political agenda. They have little experience, meager qualifications, and no respect for any viewpoints except for those of the oligarchs that bought their seats.
If Roberts thinks the Court is disrespected now, wait until they kill Medicaid and public education and the ability of federal agencies to enact regulations.

Don't believe me? Ask Afghan women in private how they like their lives being ruled by the Taliban. That's about how much American women like having their lives being ruled by YOU.

The public is not as stupid as you would like us to be. Sure, we will all never agree on every little thing, but if you think we will stand by and watch you legislate us into fascism, you're stupid, too.
And, don't forget to tell us why Thomas is so trustworthy when his wife was part of an attempt to overthrow the Government. That alone is enough to distrust ALL of you. So, keep on shaking hands and eating in the dining room, as if that makes you legit...
