...and the theft of top secret documents, and the possible sale of these documents to America's adversaries and enemies. Instead, they should focus on the serious crimes of January 6th, such as an attempted coup and the conspiracy to steal the election.
John Yoo, for those who remember, was the author of the "torture" memos during the Bush Administration. "Torture" was OK in his book. And they proceeded to follow his directions.
But, fortunately, Merrick Garland is not listening to John Yoo. He is following all the evidence. Espionage is a serious crime. Stealing documents and hiding them and then lying about it are very serious crimes. It is not a misdemeanor.
Attempting a coup and an overthrow of the elected government is also very serious. As is the attempted extortion of elected officials to change votes to favor the losing candidate. Election fraud is very serious.
Since the August recess of Congress, Merrick Garland has been full speed ahead. Just in the last week, he has issued about 40 subpoenas, perhaps more, to those under investigation in the January 6th attack. It was almost a surprise attack.
So, contrary to what John Yoo, Bill Barr, and others might wish for the AG not to indict the former president, that does not appear to be the direction he is headed. Donald Trump will be called to answer for his crimes.

(3,396 posts)Other members of the far right, like Bill Barr, are saying the same. That just leaves them with the too big to fail argument, essentially. He has no power over prosecution in this case, so dont worry about it. We should take comfort in the fact that some Republicans are admitting that Trumps actions were illegal.

(8,329 posts)At least Yoo thinks they should focus on the serious crimes of January 6th, such as an attempted coup and the conspiracy to steal the election. Finally, a Republican past the two on the 1/6 committee is willing to call 1/6 a coup and conspiracy to steal the election.

(8,329 posts)That said, John Yoo was a conservative lawyer god. When he says Instead, they should focus on the serious crimes of January 6th, such as an attempted coup and the conspiracy to steal the election hopefully it will sink in with other nutty conservative lawyers.
