It might not be totally apparent yet, but Dark Brandon — and Joe Biden — are teaching a masterclass in how to turn the tables on fascism. That counts, more than many think — for America, for history, for the future, and for the world.

Part of the story is becoming well known. Dark Brandon — Joe Biden’s alter ego, as named by the Internet — has risen, said the internet, astonished. Joe Biden suddenly made what he called the battle for the soul of democracy real. He came out swinging in a way that nobody really expected — after more than a year of a tepid Presidency, thwarted by internal obstructionism and the GOP doing its worst. His political fortunes sagging, nobody much expected Biden to do what he did next — suddenly call out fascism as fascism, issue a call to every sane American, regardless of partisan politics, that defending democracy was their duty and responsibility — and yes, this was an existential battle.

Whew. All of that electrified the nation. People were suddenly agog. For the first time since this wave of nationalism-fascism began, they had a leader speaking the truth. Speaking for them. Saying what needed to be said, instead of being intimidated, cowed, backing down, playing absurd games of chess in which somehow, giving in to the bad guys was going to win the day eventually. When has appeasement ever worked? We’ve all read history — and there were millions waiting for a leader like Dark Brandon.

Dark Brandon’s effect is real. The tables are turning. It’s not just empty internet memes. Not so long ago — before Dark Brandon — the GOP was expected to easily win the midterms, which would solidify its plan to thwart the next Presidential election, with everything from soft coups in the form of fake electors, to January 6ths at every state capitol. But now? The GOP’s on the back foot. Sane America’s woken up, and it’s not just that Biden’s standing is skyrocketing, which is how pundits put it — it’s that sane America having woken up, the game has changed. The election now isn’t going to be a walkover for the GOP. Sane America, electrified, is rallying behind Dark Brandon, this Trumanesque figure who’s giving ’em hell, only this time the battle’s existential, and from the inside — and there are copious numbers to prove how serious his effect is already.
