(19,473 posts)I see a man, no longer vigorous, who has been under immense stress and probably very short of sleep, overreacting to a minor inconvenience. Cut him some slack right now.

(36,220 posts)Thats for sure.
You think she would have ever acted like that.
Her father died when she was 25. And Charles is 70 something.

(19,473 posts)Charles isn't Elizabeth. However, 70-something (and looking much older than his chronological age) can mean having difficulty handling stress and lack of sleep.

(102,198 posts)deserves a break right now. Like the monarchy, hate the monarchy... everyone should "get" what it means to have lost your beloved mother. And to simultaneously have the eyes of the world and one's people upon you with all the expectations that entails would stress out the best of us. I'd surely be on "autopilot," just trying to get through each moment and something like a leaking pen might just be one annoyance/minor stressor too many, especially if as you surmise, he is sleep-deprived (and I'd bet that he is).

(4,549 posts)Ive gotten into FPs in the last couple years. Nothing expensive, and Im not a collector.
But, to the point, and with full appreciation of your concern, fountain pens dont leak arbitrarily. If you are careful and know the Ins-n-outs, they wont leak.
You can start with a VERY smooth writing, reliable, not-prone-to leakage DISPOSABLE Pilot Varsity.
If you are an enthusiast, then you can even tinker with them and refill them! I would not advise if a beginner tho.

(4,549 posts)Low on ink causing it to burp.
Or, possibly the pen went from a cold environment and was then held in the hand which warmed the air in the ink chamber causing pressure on the ink.
Its a real thing.
My guess is, the pen wasnt maintained properly for this very important occasion.
Ill have to go on my FP group on FB and see what the consensus is!!!!
