.

There is a little counter chip inside of them that records the amount of plug-ins. In most laptops, I think the limit is around 1,000 charges. This is their way to prevent batteries from exploding or catching fire. My sister would kill her laptop batteries in less than a year by going from room to room and plugging it in. Then, she would buy batteries from Amazon or eBay which are mostly gray market clones. Only buy laptop batteries from the manufacturer, not even from a reseller, because they might cut supply chain corners. BoingBoing did a thing 5 or more years ago about how the most legit battery is probably some clone that has no fire protections and are made using questionable batteries. The external housing looks legit, I mean really legit, but the insides. . .

Don't need a 4AM house fire.

Even though I get a new one every year. It’s all backed up to iCloud, so when I get a new phone, all I have to do is hit restore, wait an hour, and my new phone will be exactly like my previous phone.

Bought when the 8 came on the market several years ago so the 7 version was not “quite” as expensive. Needed a new phone as the one I had wouldn’t always open - thumb button kaput.

At some point Apple will no longer support my current phone and I will have to update. But until that happens I don’t need a new one. Would I like the newest version? In a heartbeat. But I am trying to be a good steward and not add to to the electronic waste stream until I absolutely have to get a replacement. Ditto the iPad. Easier on my bank account, too.

Have I mentioned these phones (of all brands) are an inferriating racket?? 😂

In Apple math, "SE" comes between "6" and "7".

If I change phones, I'll just load the new one from a cloud backup, and it will have most of the apps automatically. The music might need to still be copied from the old phone or copied using a sync with iTunes. I can copy the photos from the old phone, but don't know if those are part of the cloud backup.

The previous phone could only make phone calls, although it allegedly had rudimentary Internet access, which I was never able to get to function. It was a piece of crap my provider sent when 2G went away. A flip phone would have been a huge improvement. I opted for a smart phone this time, since I had a choice. There was no data to transfer to it, other than a few phone numbers, and anything else can also be accessed from a computer.

A couple days ago I got one of those phishing texts that said "Dear user, thanks for your order #xxxxxx of iPhone 13 Pro. $999.99 will be debited from your balance. Contact Customer Support 18055769254 to edit or cancel."

I got this text on my iPhone 13 Pro XS. Why, exactly, would I buy a cheaper phone to replace the one I already have? I figured that since I keep phones for many years - I upgraded from iPhone 7 a few months ago, and only did that because my carrier required everyone have a 5G phone - why not spend some bucks and get a really good one? I figure by the time they introduce iPhone 20 I'll be ready to buy a new phone.

When this phone showed up, it came with an instruction: put your old phone next to this one, plug both of them into the wall, establish a Wi-fi link on both phones, and run a specific program. I did this and it copied all the data from the old one to the new one.

Then the battery won't hold a decent charge and the phone starts bogging down running apps designed for newer, faster processors.

Not a big deal though, AT&T gave me $1600 for two trade in iPhone XRs I bought for $800 on a BOGO deal 3 years ago and sold me two new 13 Pros for $1700. Total out of pocket cost for the upgrade was ~$250 in taxes and connection fees and $3/month for 2 years added to my bill.

So I finally have a (most inexpensive I could find) smart phone to replace my seven year old flip phone (named Flipper, because I shamelessly anthropomorphize five appliances I own).

Never did find a way to transfer the data from one to the other, so I just sat down with a bottle of gin in hand and Chuck Mangione in the air and spent an evening transcribing the names, numbers, etc. A real first-world, pain in the butt.

Then ask your carrier why it won't work, they will generally get you a deal on a new one. Mine is 7 year old Samsung I got for about 100 bucks. Admittedly I don't do a whole lot with it but it's still running strong with good battery life.

People only keep a phone for a couple years? Seriously?

The house in Kentucky was sold with the hard wired phone still on the wall and working. I do have a cell phone. Spent a small fortune for that nokia. Had to switch to a cheap motorola when service support changed and then had to ditch it for a different flip phone 5 years ago. If it was up to me I'd still be using the nokia.

If it ain't broke don't change it.
