They felt they were finally going to be able to live the American Dream, said Juan Correa Villalonga, a 34-year-old Sunrise resident who fled Venezuela with his family at age 11. Little did they know they were being sent to an island of millionaires. They cant stay there. It was all a political stunt.
Villalonga knows what its like to hope for a new life then be sent back to the country you thought youd left behind. He was deported in 2009, then later allowed to return to the United States.
Theres a lot of fear out there, he said. When people see this, theres a great sense of panic in the immigrant communities. But people are outraged. We feel lied to. Weve sat across the table from DeSantis and he has told us he would support immigrant communities. We feel used and manipulated.
She said of DeSantis: He chartered two planes to take them to Marthas Vineyard of all places. Imagine arriving here and then being put on a plane, not being told where theyre going. Who in their right mind would do something like that? It shows no compassion to take people like that and ship them out.
Evelyn Pérez-Verdía, a Colombian-American political strategist from Weston, had sharp words for the governor, saying he used people who are escaping dictatorships as pawns for his political future.
It shows why he is so dangerous, she said. Because he treats human beings as if they were not human. There is no time to cry. Its not about crying. Its about doing something about this. This should embolden our Latino communities to get involved and vote for people who are going to treat them with respect.

Sep 6, 2022
Tallahassee, Fla. Today, Florida Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services Nikki Fried, an independently-elected member of the Florida Cabinet and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency, called for an investigation into the Florida Office of Election Crimes and Securitys decision toarrest 20 individuals for illegally voting even though the state had approved their voter registration applications as well as the failure of the Florida Department of States Division of Elections to identify the applicants as ineligible.
The letter reads in part: While under current law, these individuals were not eligible to vote, the persecution of this predominantly Black group of Floridians who broke the law without intent is not only disproportionate punishment but cruel. That cruelty is even more so as it becomes evident that what should have been investigated was how and why the state provided ineligible voters with registrations and that their traumatic arrests appear to have been done for pure publicity purposes, stoking fear and discouraging others who are eligible from exercising their rights to vote in the future.

(5,125 posts)Why are you defending the man who WANTS TO BE tRump so he can be dictator?
Who persecutes people for voting, who were told it was legal for them to vote, but takes money from dark sources that don't have to reveal who they are?
Who wouldn't let his state actually report COVID information because it made him look bad?
People like him are who the founding fathers figured The People would take care of, with tar and feathers and ride them out on a rail.
Allowing rich people to rule the world is how the reThugs roll, you want to be on their side, get off a Democratic board.
tRump got rid of anyone who challenged him too.
Technically legal, but unethical as hell and broke the government which is supposed to protect people from dictators.

Election law experts told the Times/Herald the payments were a potential violation of state campaign finance laws that ban the use of straw donors to shield the true source of campaign funds, as well as federal tax rules for nonprofits.
When asked whether those schemes would be investigated by the Office of Election Crimes and Security, Mark Ard, spokesperson for the office, said: Violations of campaign financing ... are generally referred to the Florida Elections Commission.
Among the recipients of the funds was DeSantis 2018 campaign. According to leaked documents, his political committee received $25,000, channeled through a nonprofit that didnt have to reveal its donors.

He said the promises came from a woman who gave her name as "Perla" who approached his family on the street outside a San Antonio shelter after they crossed from Mexico and U.S. border authorities released them with an immigration court date.

had some evil plan where he could take credit for being the "hero" in owning the libs simply
because the plane touched down and flew out of Florida. If the plane had flown "as the crow flies"
it would have used a lot less fuel.

(82,849 posts)The folks DeSantis trafficked north (in a move reminiscent of the anti-freedom riders sponsored by the White Citizens Council 60 years ago) weren't even in Florida, they were in Texas. Apparently DeSantis has $12 million at his disposal to charter jets from Texas to Massachusetts. Is this how Florida taxpayers want their money spent?

(2,347 posts)The law stipulates that he can only use the money to move people as long as the transportation originates out of Florida. So, to get around this, the planes made a quick stop in Florida and then flew on to Martha's Vineyard.
So, he's technically in violation of the law. Will the Florida legislature show any spine and stand up to him? Seeing as how they caved on his demand to illegally racially gerrymander a Black Democrat out of office (he vetoed the legislature's map, saying it was an illegal racial gerrymander), I highly doubt it.

Of course, due to the nature of the stunt, and his other shenanigans/policies while in office, there's also the implied evil from the pronunciation of Evel, so the pun works, too.
