(2,166 posts)When the Cross Bronx Expressway was built, the road went right through the poor area, destroyed neighborhoods, undervalued the real estate to rip off poor and minority owners. To this day, its a fussy, that doesnt help traffic flow. Amazing how the road didnt go through any richer areas.

Seriously Austin is a traffic nightmare and I-35 is the only interstate. The city is even surrounded by toll roads, which is unusual for a city of its size.
US 90, I-10, I-35 and I-37 kinda do the same thing in San Antonio. However, before there were interstates there were railroads and stockyards. I-35 and 37 kinda run parallel to the railroad tracks.

(36,256 posts)Interstate 35 in Austin, Texas, was built in 1962 and has become a symbol of wealth inequality in the Lone Star States capital. It cuts off communities of color in east Austin from the wealthier downtown neighborhood a disparity nationally highlighted during the devastating power outages that swept through Texas this year (Energywire, Feb. 23).
Despite momentum from community groups in Austin to remove or cap I-35, the Transportation Department has proposed a massive expansion of up to 20 lanes.
I assume "Transportation Dept" refers to Texas state DOT.

(25,201 posts)I-35 divides the capitol district from a residential district. My daughter lives in east Austin in the community of color discussed above. It's gentrified. They live in a 100 year old duplex that's appraised at $500,000. ($1,000,000 for the entire structure) They own 1/2 of the duplex. Their side of the duplex has about 700 square feet. Her husband bought the place about 25 years ago when he was single and working a bunch of hours. The place was close to his work and cheap.

Most of the highway system was built through black neighborhoods, Even when it would have been cheaper to run it through a predominantly white neighborhood
