I have lived in MA all my life.
The verbal abuse and lies about the Vineyard and the Islanders on the internet is heartbreaking. Sure the summer residents are wealthy. The Islanders are working people.
Some ugly internet comments:
-MV deported them
-They wanted them off the island so they could count their silverware
-They wouldn't hug them, they are smelly
-They had all the brown hired help they needed on The Racist Vineyard Island
Here is the truth of what MV did.
Vineyard Community Rallies Relief Efforts to Assist Stranded Migrants
State and Island officials, faith-based groups, nonprofit agencies and volunteers rallied quickly to accommodate 50 mostly Venezuelan migrants who arrived unexpectedly at Marthas Vineyard Airport Wednesday, part of a coordinated political campaign to divert migrants from border states.

Attorneys are meeting with each person individually, said Janet Constantino, a coordinator with the Island Counseling Center. A lot of them have dates with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), so they are trying to figure out when the court cases can be rescheduled.
Ms. Constantino added that Marthas Vineyard Community Services had purchased numerous smartphones for the migrants so they could check in with their families. "Some of them have not spoken to their families in months, she said.

People are very anxious to leave, he said, noting that many thought they were going to Boston. He added that none of the group had planned to arrive on the Vineyard, and state and federal agencies were working together to connect people with friends and family members in the United States.

They came with folders with a pamphlet with our information, said Beth Folcarelli, chief executive officer of MV Community Services. We dont have refugee services. I had no idea about any of this. I only found out because one of them gave me their folder. Imagine being dropped in here knowing no one. Absolutely no one. Its heartbreaking.

As they were leaving they most certainly were hugged.

MV has said they are preparing for the next 'shipment'. They had no clue, until it landed and they disembarked that they were migrants.

(5,125 posts)Too bad DeSatan and his publicity folks wanted to make this a bad thing for MV.
THE TRUTH WILL PREVAIL.

I applaud them for their rapid response.

(111,174 posts)Winter weather can get pretty hairy, both from storm damage and supply disruption while they wait for an icebreaker to come clear the harbor. People are used to supporting those who need it.
I lived across the Sound, did spend time there, mostly during the off season.
I don't think De Satan could have picked a better place to have this stunt blow up in his piggy Republican face.

(6,679 posts)The people given temp asylum while awaiting a hearing tend to come from the worst of life threatening circumstances. Getting to family elsewhere is all they have left.
I am glad the folks on MV are making sure everyone gets to the destinations they had planned and don't end up in a situation for missing a hearing date. And I bet it didn't cost $12,000 a person either.
Can you even imagine how many bus tickets that could buy to get refugees to their family in the US as in out of Texas. "Problem" solved.

(83,666 posts)It is okay, MV has got it.
Next up, an investigation as to where all that money went. I want to see the receipts.
Thanks, KentuckyWoman.

(21,776 posts)So if deSantis was trying to show up the "rich libs", he missed the mark. Big time. Instead, he hit on the year-round residents.
You are right! 👍

On and on it goes.
So the reality is one thing and the spin is another.
Fox News is editing it to make it look like MV doesn't want them there, just to prove that "no one wants migrants".

(128,527 posts)Growing up, one of my next door neighbors owned property in Oak Bluffs and would pack up the car and go up for a few weeks every summer.
I know over the years, Martha's Vineyard has been the subject of a lot of politicized crap (while Nantucket seems to escape that sort of rancor).
I am glad to see that the residents stepped up to show the world how it's done!
