This was a great speech. I have a certificate for both of my paternal grandparents coming through Ellis Island. I am glad that AG Garland called out Loose Cannon on the concept that TFG has special rights different from other US Citizens.

"As a function of Plaintiff's former position as President of the United States, the stigma associated with the subject seizure is in a league of its own," said a Sept. 5 decision from U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee. "A future indictment, based to any degree on property that ought to be returned, would result in reputational harm of a decidedly different order of magnitude."
Cannon also noted in a Sept. 15 ruling that the "principles of equity require the Court to consider the specific context at issue, and that consideration is inherently impacted by the position formerly held by Plaintiff."
Garland, who typically refrains from engaging in politics, did not address either debate, but instead talked about the importance of the rule of law in upholding democracy.
The rule of law means that the law treats each of us alike, he said. There is not one rule for friends, another for foes; one rule for the powerful, another for the powerless; one rule for the rich, another for the poor; or different rules, depending upon ones race or ethnicity or country of origin.

#OnThisDay in 1787, 39 of the 55 Constitutional Convention delegates signed their names to the U.S. Constitution.
It was Benjamin Franklin who made the motion to sign the document in his last great speech. #ConstitutionDay

The #Constitution is our nations most enduring document, but not everything you read online about the Constitution is accurate.
Here are some of the top myths about the Constitution and the Founding Fathers still out there. #ConstitutionDay

(2,049 posts)There are people above the law due to wealth or position.
Nothing will happen to TFG. Lots of special rules for him. Nothing will happen to the ringleaders of J6 either.
This is all just a show to make us believe that they will be held accountable.

(1,664 posts)It's for other people. When we see TFG skating and his hand picked boot lickers ...I mean judges saying he's special we know that the constitution has been completely abandoned by some portion of our society.

(21,146 posts)once showed me the certificate saying that my great grandfather renounced being a subject of the German Empire, renounced all allegiance to Kaiser Wilhelm II, and swore allegiance to the United States of America.
That was my mother's side of the family.
On my father's side, half had come to America before there was a United States and the other half were already in America before Europeans arrived.

"Everything Mr. Garland says these days is parsed for deeper meaning and prosecutorial clues as the Justice Department plunges ahead with sprawling, open-ended investigations into former President Donald J. Trump and his allies. The attorney general often uses public appearances to address Mr. Trump and Trumpism in veiled but unmistakable terms, decrying division and vowing to hold 'the powerful' accountable for crimes they commit," The New York Times reported.
"But Saturdays speech came at a critical moment, as Mr. Garland commits to an inquiry into possible criminality by a former president who remains a political force, and has repeatedly attacked Mr. Garland, his department and the F.B.I."
Garland's speech came only days after Trump-appointed Judge Aileen Cannon issued a highly criticized ruling claiming Trump deserved special treatment as a former president.......
The protection of law the rule of law is the foundation of our system of government, Garland told the new citizens.
The rule of law means that the law treats each of us alike: There is not one rule for friends, another for foes; one rule for the powerful, another for the powerless; a rule for the rich, another for the poor, Garland said.
Garland argued the rule of law is fragile, it demands constant effort and vigilance.
Cannon was widely criticized for arguing Trump deserved different than everyone else.
"Based on the nature of this action, the principles of equity require the Court to consider the specific context at issue, and that consideration is inherently impacted by the position formerly held by Plaintiff," Cannon wrote.
Harvard Law's Laurence Tribe tweeted Cannon, "ends her denial of a stay by saying (in effect) former presidents are entitled to special treatment."
