(4,458 posts)the myth that they will overload the power grid has been repeatedly debunked. Most EVs charge up overnight when there is plenty of spare capacity on the grid. In fact, a number of utilities have special tariffs for overnight charging.

(33,643 posts)There's too many variables involved to discount the possibility every where, at every time.
If there gets to be a lot of EV's it could definitely be a problem in certain places on certain days. Also as the population of EV's grows there will be growing pressure on, say, office buildings, to provide lots of chargers so employees can charge during the day (not every EV will have the capacity to get everyone to work and back on one charge).
Could also be an employee perk i.e. Hey, free charging at the office!
Right now most charging is done at home overnight but that could absolutely change.
I definitely think it's wise to really be thinking about beefing up the grid in anticipation, esp. in places where it now SUCKS. You know, like Texas
