Emperor Desantis gives his absurdly false version of how he expects history to be taught: It was the American Revolution that caused people to question slavery. No one had questioned it before we decided as Americans that we are endowed by our creator with unalienable rights.

(182,585 posts)where this germinated. A lot of slaves did escape during the mayhem and chaos of the Revolution.
Movements amongst slaves used universal rights as the engine. This is quite a twist by DeSantis.

(53,726 posts)it seems...making up a mishmash of the history of enslavement from the fragments of what his little brain remembers from the Civil War and Revolutionary War teachings all blended together.
Why do these republican dummies think they know better than professional educators with degrees?

(7,365 posts)the intelligentsia oftentimes do study and research to come to a conclusion that does not advance their agenda. Thus by definition higher education brain washes people to "be left". It's basic Fascism 101, education must be taken over by right wing adherents so THEY can actually do the brainwashing.

(90,758 posts)no one had ever thought of freedom before. We invented freedom and them thar rights too. White men done told their slaves about freedom, and wee doggy, those slaves weren't having none of it. Not for another 89 years would they even allow us to speak of it again. No, sir. No freedom for them. Said they didn't need it. Never once heard a slave complain about being a slave. Nope. Freedom was a head-scratcher for them. Slaves never questioned slavery. 'Cause no one ever questioned slavery before us white men in America did. We did that. You may thank us now.

Speaking at an event Tuesday, the Republican tried to downplay a lawsuit over his oppressive "Stop WOKE Act," a law designed to severely restrict educators ability to teach about social ills. DeSantis has railed against teachers in his state who have sought to educate their students on truths about racial, gender and sexuality-based inequality. But his rambling, ahistorical diatribe showed why hes not to be taken seriously on those matters.
In his remarks, he maligned The 1619 Project, a New York Times multimedia effort focused on the roots of slavery in virtually all aspects of American life. White Republicans led by former President Donald Trump have denounced the project as un-American since its debut in 2019. And they have decried academic focuses on social inequality, like critical race theory, just the same.
The Times project is a CRT version of history, DeSantis claimed. He added, They want to teach our kids that the American Revolution was fought to protect slavery, which he said, wrongly, was false. (Well get to that in a moment.)
But DeSantis went even further, claiming that Americas revolution against Britain was solely responsible for the movement to abolish slavery. No one had questioned it [slavery] before we decided as Americans that we are endowed by our creator with unalienable rights and that we are all created equal, DeSantis said.
He delivered those demonstrably false remarks with all the confidence of a seventh-grade student bluffing their way through a class presentation.
