Politically conservative individuals tend to be slightly more receptive to political bullshit, according to new research that examined participants from three different countries. The study, which examined statements of political content that intend to persuade voters, but are so vague and broad that they are essentially meaningless, has been published in the Journal of Social and Political Psychology.
Vukasin Gligoric, the corresponding author of the study and a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam, said he was motivated to investigate the topic of political bullshit for two primary reasons.
One is that Ive been interested in politics and political psychology for quite some time, he explained. Secondly, I was inspired by Gordon Pennycook and colleagues very related work on pseudo-profound bullshit (sentences that sound deep because they use complex words, but are actually meaningless). Specifically, it was one paper that investigated whether neoliberals are more receptive to pseudo-profound bullshit. In the discussion, they give a possible example of bullshit in politics, where politicians could say something like I believe in America! Then I realized oh my God, there is a lot going on here.
Given how often politicians use grandiose phrases that lack any real meaning, Gligoric was surprised to find that there was little research on it. For me, the discrepancy between how prevalent the phenomenon is and the lack of investigation of the topic is staggering, he said.

(4,381 posts)American democracy. I was gobsmacked to find the rest of my FOO registered as Democrats. I rationalize, and perhaps science does concur, that the "cruel and destructive" have severe trauma in their own or transgenerational lives that has caused those brain differences and beliefs more displayed, and best explained, as a)religious fundamentalism (American religious Taliban) or b)MAGAs, the willfully ignorant; some of those beliefs are damn hard to shake as one tries to heal from a sort of mixed messaging and outright lies that cause complex PTSD that, in turn, destroys self-esteem and confidence namely, familial covert negligence and abuse; co-dependency, and opaque, dishonest power and control versus honest transparency. I'll admit; my worldview was corrupted as a child, and I feel betrayed; I struggle most with the consequences of personal political "free will" and how best to love the cruel and destructive. Paying no attention via either a) or b) above is NOT an option! I treasure and hope against hope that most would treasure democracy's VOTE and process as the highest good and chance for our nation's peace and enjoyment of our lives.
1 Corinthians 13:11
8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a (wo)man, I put away childish things. 12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
