Elijah McClain's autopsy report changed to death by ketamine

The Adams County coroner has changed the cause of death of 23-year-old Elijah McClain to ketamine administration following forcible restraint but maintains that the manner of death is “undetermined” — contradicting the state’s case against the police officers and paramedics who are charged in connection to his death.

It’s unclear exactly why the elected Adams County Coroner Monica Broncucia-Jordan and her contracted forensic pathologist changed their minds last year amid a statewide grand jury investigation.

In the amended autopsy report made public on Friday, Dr. Stephen Cina, who performs autopsies for Adams County, wrote that he received new information in the grand jury probe, including extensive body camera footage, witness statements and additional records. He said he requested those back when he performed the original autopsy in 2019, but didn’t get everything.

Cina noted that the large dose of ketamine McClain received by paramedics was the biggest culprit in his death.

“Simply put, this dosage of ketamine was too much for this individual and it resulted in an overdose … I believe that Mr. McClain would most likely be alive but for the administration of ketamine.”

This is going to be very, very bad news for some people. That stuff should not be administered except by doctor's order, and they had no earthly reason to administer it to Elijah McClain.

That said, I think he could have recovered had they not so horrifically physically abused and terrified him leading to a resultant adrenaline release of massive proportions.

That young man was so innocent. Among the many instances of police abuse, this is one I won't forget (and not just because it occurred nearby).

Be at peace, Elijah.

I did find that ems are allowed to give that to “agitated” patients. The dose listed in one article I found is intramuscular 4 mg per kg IM so it depends on weight. But other factors have to be taken into consideration. It seems he was given an overdose as well.

They did this to my father at the hospital when we told them to stop giving him anti psychotic drugs which were dangerous for him. Right before he finally ate, after no food for 30 hours of being drugged and restrained in an er, they injected another one. He aspirated right after that. Which they failed to treat properly and which eventually caused his death/murder.

abusing Elijah McClain in the way they did, period. Police could have stopped him, asked him who he was and where he was going and let him go there. Period. End of story. He was guilty of existing as an autistic Black man, found guilty, and executed without a trial.
