It's like the difference between picking up a dinner plate versus a fork. With the fork, you grasp it by wrapping your fingers around it--a prehensile grasp. With a plate, you grasp it, but you don't wrap your hand around it.

Prehensile can also be a descriptor of intelligence, and here the grasping is in the sense of grasping ideas by wrapping your mind around them.

Being popular was a ticket to getting away with all kinds of things in school. Kid A and Kid B both get caught smoking behind the gym.

Kid B is a "normal" kid, often poor and/or brown. He gets suspended.

Kid A is popular, often middle class at least and/or white. The worst that happens to him is that his parents get called for a conference about his unruly behavior..

Everything we needed to learn about life, we learned at school. Including how the rules never applied to some people the way they did to others.
