There are around 500,000 H1Bs in the US of all races and nationalities. About 250,000 are from India. And about 5 million US citizens are of Indian race or ancestry.

Educated liberal Democrats turn stupid really fast on this issue when things get a little difficult. When it's challenging to find jobs, people stop caring about where a person is born, raised, or hold citizenship. They don't even care about papers, of which I have a US birth certificate and passport. These jobs are only for "real" Americans, not job stealers like you. No job for you!

32. My H1B story. I worked for a large insurance company that shall remain nameless...
Sat Sep 24, 2022, 04:11 PM
Sep 2022

In the mid 2000's, the company went through a huge transformative upgrade of the IT department. It took about two years to complete. Near the end of the process, the company held an 'all employees' meeting where management congratulated themselves for the outstanding success they had achieved. There was even passing praise given to the employees who had actually implemented the changes.

Soon after, the company began hiring new H1B employees, mostly from India. The current long term employees were asked to train them. Apparently the new hires from India were working out ok, because a few months later the company hired many more H1B employees, and began terminating the current employees, mostly longterm, higher paid employees, and offering them packages, but only if they would train their replacements.

I worked in another department (the company tried to outsource the annual federal report our department produced. It didn't go well and they scratched that effort, but that is a another story). One morning our manager came by and told us to stay at our desks and 'keep our heads down'. There was a mass layoff going on in the IT department and we were not to acknowledge or speak of it.

This is a true story. Management is not your friend.

IronLionZion

35. They likely contracted out their IT. That's the root problem
Sat Sep 24, 2022, 04:59 PM
Sep 2022

American want to be employees. IT is a cost center for many companies. Managers prefer contractors who can be added for a few weeks or months and removed easily and without notice, temp agency style.

It's a deplorable way to live. The contract workers have to pay thousands of dollars to move to a new city every few months with little or no reimbursement. Americans don't want to live like that. The American dream always involves home ownership.

Reform contracting to treat workers better and that fixes the main motivation to hire H1Bs. There's a reason Americans won't even apply to the many American contracting firms all across the US. It's the same reason why American contracting firm recruiters clog up my inbox when I put my photo in LinkedIn, but I get fewer messages when I take my photo down. It's an American tradition to treat brown people badly in ways that white people will sue or quit or expose them in the media.

The offshores and H1Bs were going to be the new developers and we were going to be "business analysts". I don't want to be indelicate, but the only training they got from me was a description of a pretty much impossible anatomical act. That went for management too.

The stuff about race and IQ sorted all "racial" groups by what they called intelligence. Guess who came out on top?

I made quite a study of the issue in grad school. It's bogus science. Period. What that prof said is accurate. There is no evidence that genetics causes group differences in IQ.

I put racial in quotes above because there are no races in homo sapiens as a taxonomist would use the term.

Sun Sep 25, 2022, 08:23 AM
Sep 2022

And there's a great deal of doubt that the genetics of one "group" versus another will show differences.

The research literature is not entirely clear on what it is exactly that IQ tests measure, and there's all sorts of problems with the cultural biases of any given set of questions, but it's pretty clear that one thing IQ tests do not measure is that which we call "smarts". My college education professor once told me the main thing they measure is someone's ability at taking certain kinds of tests.

57. The idea has many roots
Sun Sep 25, 2022, 08:09 AM
Sep 2022

Some of it can be traced to Thomas Jefferson and his "natural philosophy" speculations on the abilities of different races. It was all his style of seat-of-the-pants subjective intellectual speculation that led to some very good as well as very bad idea

But there were eugenics ideas bouncing around the Western world including skull studies that drew naive inferences about intelligence for decades during the 19th century. That's how science works. There also was the idea that racial distinctions we're mostly situational poppycock, and that idea came out of America too. In fact, that argument also can be traced to Thomas Jefferson and his natural philosophy.
