Dorothy Celene Thompson (July 9, 1893 – January 30, 1961) was an American journalist and radio broadcaster. She was the first American journalist to be expelled from Nazi Germany in 1934 and was one of the few women news commentators on radio during the 1930s.[1][2] Thompson is regarded by some as the "First Lady of American Journalism"[3] and was recognized by Time magazine in 1939 as equal in influence to Eleanor Roosevelt.

Thompson's most significant work abroad took place in Germany in the early 1930s.[2] While working in Munich, Thompson met and interviewed Adolf Hitler for the first time in 1931. This would be the basis for her subsequent book, I Saw Hitler, in which she wrote about the dangers of him winning power in Germany.[1] Thompson described Hitler in the following terms: "He is formless, almost faceless, a man whose countenance is a caricature, a man whose framework seems cartilaginous, without bones. He is inconsequent and voluble, ill poised and insecure. He is the very prototype of the little man."[10]

Later, when the full force of Nazism had crashed over Europe, Thompson was asked[by whom?] to defend her "little man" remarks; it seemed she had underestimated Hitler.[6] The Nazis considered both the book and her articles offensive and, in August 1934, Thompson was expelled from Germany. She was the first American journalist to be kicked out.[11]

She wrote a remarkable essay about attending a NYC? cocktail party in which she gives her opinion of the personalities of the other guests there and gives her opinion of how they would react to rise of a fascist party in the states, ie, who would be all in for it, who would resist to the last breath and who would follow the crowd whatever why it went. I don't know what magazine this was published in, maybe it's referenced on her wikipedia write up?

born out of realization that it wouldn't be impossible for the Axis powers to conquer Europe and Germany invade the U.S. Fear would have been far greater if people had known Germany was racing to get the atomic bomb first.

Studies of authoritarian governments show that almost everyone collaborates to get along. Very few would "resist to the last breath." A Russian on NPR said that Putin's tightening the authoritarian screws in Russia is breaking important webs of social relationships there as people decide they can't trust each other as they used to.

I play a version these days. Who's a Nazi?

It was published by Harpers magazine in 1941. Wikipedia includes a link to page on the article. It's as relevant today as when it was written. IMO.

Like many here now she made fun of hitler and thought he would never gain power. Until he did. Then she was dismayed, kept attacking him and was thrown out of the country. Lucky for her.

It's not being taught in school anymore, because anything Anti Nazi is woke to the GOP. The public isn't being taught this history anymore, and it's dooming us to repeat it.

Love how Burns makes clear from the outset that the Nazis first targeted the Socialists, Liberals, and Communists in Germany. The Right is deeply invested in Nazis somehow being liberals because socialist is a word in their official party name. The Nazis were far right extremists, very very little of their ideology was left of center. Some of their ideas about the economy might not exactly have been far right, but there is little mistaking them for what they were and who today most resembles them.

Seeing fascists seize power in Italy is chilling. My fear as that climate change is going to give rise to a new fascist wave as immigration becomes such a bigger issue due to the changing climate.
