The fact that there’s such an industry around this is remarkable. The writer went to the inner circle of the Grand Poobahs of that world.

The author of the article really hit the right note here. The story had changed and Kobek had to know it.

At this point, the man was becoming a troubling distraction. Kobek had set out to write a cultural study that explored notions like uncertainty, historical revisionism, and self-validating leaps of logic, not to lose himself in rabbit holes of his own making. But each new bit of information, rather than excluding Doerr, as Kobek expected, seemed to deepen the connections. A friend, author Jonathan Lethem, remembers Kobek struggling as the implications of his research began to hit home. “When he kind of bumbles into this suspect, he’s really in denial,” Lethem recalls. “Like, ‘This isn’t good.’ It overtook his project.”

Very very amazing.

And by the end she thought it was him, which shows a capability for rational thought, despite all the crap she has endured. Her mom wasn’t much better than her dad. And it might have started with her leaving that evil house, so there might be undeserved guilt on top of that.

But yet she turned into a functioning human being. She overcame both nature and nurture. I know she didn’t know the accusation the he was a serial killer until now, but I only had one abusive parent, and that was hard enough. All I can say is that the teacher who took her in must have been pretty amazing, and she must be amazing too.

Zodiac. Doerr seems a strong candidate. Can't be many people who are into cryptology AND the Mikado. Don't understand why cops wouldn't be a bit more curious. Would really be interesting if a DNA comparison could be made. (Doerr surely was a violent SOB, if Gloria's account can be believed.)

I’d guess they could do that now. For that time period there’s a high chance of military service.
