An off-duty Massachusetts National Guard member aggressively confronted a tour bus full of senior citizens thinking they were migrantsThe incident comes on the heels of a political stunt by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis chartering two planes to send 50 migrants to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The state's governor Charlie Baker said the migrants have since been moved to a military base shelter in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
The off-duty service member pursued the tour bus for at least 10 miles to their hotel in East Falmouth, later confronting the bus driver, Michael Vaughn, and 37 senior citizens aboard.
"He thought there were immigrants on the bus," Vaughn, the owner of Tallahassee-based transportation company Mikes Limousine, told the Cape Cod Times. "He was totally wrong."
Vaughn told the local news outlet that the service member "was literally five feet off my bumper" as he tailed the vehicle, even when he tried slowing down and changing lanes.

(25,816 posts)Despite my screen name, I'm female. I live in New Mexico, and among the many things I love about living here is the respect given to older women. Even though I'm obviously Anglo (honestly, I could have an A tattooed on my forehead) I get all the respect given to moms and grandmothers here. I long ago learned to be cautious about chatting with people ahead of me in line at the grocery store (I'm a natural chat person) because almost invariably they will insist I go ahead of them. How kind, but unnecessary.
Here's another advantage to looking like mom or grandma here. I never get a ticket when driving. Well, okay, I do try to drive right and obey the laws as I'm sure you all do. But like anyone, I occasionally get stopped for a minor infraction. There have been times when I honestly deserved a ticket (and I told my sons, when they were first driving, that because they were young and male they would get tickets when I wouldn't, which was absolutely accurate) but did not get one.
Here's my favorite such story: I was returning home to Santa Fe from Tucson, just after Thanksgiving. A bit outside of Deming, NM, I speeded up because I knew the speed limit increased a lot about a half mile further on. Big mistake. I looked in my rearview mirror, saw the flashing lights, and of course pulled over. Worse yet, when the cop got out of his car, he wasn't much younger than me. Damn. I knew I wouldn't look like grandma, or even mom to him. I was, of course, as polite as was appropriate, gave him my license, and he noted my home address. "You're going back to Santa Fe?" he asked? "Yes, sir. I spent Thanksgiving in Tucson with family." He returned my license, cautioned me about the speed limit, and sent me on my way.
Again, I am not remotely Hispanic, and I'm constantly in awe of how local Hispanics treat people like me. I am an interloper. I know that. I love living here. I'm happy to be here. I love living where I hear Spanish spoken every day. I love it that those who speak Spanish can take one look at me and switch immediately to English. I wish my Spanish were better, but alas, it is not. But I am fortunate and happy to live here.

(30,978 posts)She and her husband live in the middle of a big ranch near Truth or Consequences. She loves it there. Shes from Delaware, which is where I live now. I have said that Delawareans are like salmon, we go out to sea for a while then come back to the stream we were spawned in. She stayed in New Mexico though. High desert. Roadrunners, hummingbirds. We text just about every day. I went to visit her once and rented a car in Denver and drove down I 25. What a great ride I saw a large herd of antelope. My Spanish isnt all that good either but I do love to hear people speak it.Thats a cool story about not getting that ticket. Its great when a policeman turns out to be a human being

(25,816 posts)and more often. Fortunately, Spanish is not required, even if it can be useful.
I am constantly amazed that when I'm standing in line somewhere, the clerk will immediately switch languages as needed.
When I was first here I worked at the local hospital, doing outpatient registration, meaning, if you needed to come here for an MRI or blood work or something like that, you'd see me or one of my co-workers, we'd fill out the appropriate paperwork and you'd be on your way. Of course, a lot, probably a third, of the outpatients spoke little or no English, and fortunately several of my co-workers were fully bi-lingual. My passive Spanish improved enormously. Of course, much of what was being said back and forth was such that I could tell what was being spoken: filling out the forms, the explanation of what would happen. I knew those things in English, so I could then understand the Spanish.
I have never been to Truth or Consequences. There is far too much of this state that I have not explored. Every state in our wonderful country is worth exploring. Some simply have more to explore than others. Anyway, if you decide to come out here again (and I'd suggest flying in to Albuquerque) you could contact me and we might perhaps meet up. But absolutely have a wonderful time with your friend.

(81,392 posts)Vaughn tried slowing down and changing lanes on Route 28 to let the pickup truck pass to no avail.
"He harassed us to death," said Vaughn. "Everybody was scared to death."
At one point, Hoffman boarded the tour bus. "He was walking right up on the bus uninvited," said Vaughn. At that point, the passengers began yelling at Hoffman.
"These older Black women were on his a--," Vaughn said.

If he thought they were migrants, he could have tailed the bus to its destination without riding their bumper with his high beams on. Once there he should have just called the police. He did not.

.............In a statement to Insider, Col. Mark Kalin, a director at the Massachusetts Army National Guard, said the National Guard "considers the conduct of this soldier to be inappropriate and inconsistent with our military values."
"We are currently working to ensure our service member is evaluated and receives any services he may need, while also reviewing appropriate disciplinary actions," Kalin said. "The incident is currently under investigation and no further information is available at this time."
Video viewed by the Cape Cod Times showed Hoffman attempting to board the bus to see the passengers on board.
"I have every right as a U.S citizen to see what's going on," the service member is heard saying. "You know what I'm talking about."......................

(26,311 posts)Thats fairly high on the rank end. A guy like that might feel like he has some juice on the street. Maybe he was going to report the driver.
Like I said, I could be totally off base. But if he agrees with Desantis why is he chasing the bus down?
The statement about trying to get some good guys admitted from Afghanistan is kind of right-wingy. Maybe he has a case of raw ass over that. Maybe he feels out out by having to host these people on his base.
Im not invested either way. It just seemed odd.
Either way, he fucked up.

This is racially motivated and shouldnt be lawful.
Who the fuck gave him the authority to pursue any fucking body?
Piece of shit.

(1,299 posts)I could be totally wrong, but this doesnt sound like a guy motivated by racial animosity. There is no indication that he saw the people on the bus before he boarded it. This sounds like a mentally ill man (PTSD from the war?) with entitlement issues. He needs to be evaluated and charged with something - I dont know what exactly - and relieved of whatever duties he has. Personally, I mostly blame DeSantis and Abbott for purposefully creating an environment in which incidents like this can happen. In any case, that must have been one harrowing ride for the bus driver and passengers.
live love laugh
(13,079 posts)Karen syndrome springs from mental illness from what Ive seen. You dont call the police on a bird watcher or approach delivery people or work crews obviously doing their jobs all of whom are black unless you are crazy AND racist.
This guy is no exception.
You dont harass people for miles and then expect no consequence because you basically say oops my bad.
Also: turn the tables.
What do you think would have happened if any person of color did this shit?
