I lived in Orlando some 40 yrs ago for awhile. Omg! Roaches the size of transport planes & lizzards all over in yards. Being a native Chicagoan, that was FAR from appealing.

but less often than pride gets hurricanes.

I have relatives in the Tampa area who wanted me to move there. Not a chance. I have visited, but would not choose to live there. Too humid, too hot, too RW, and they get hurricanes.

I'll stick to occasional blizzards in a blue state.

Fifty year-old Florida dreams of waves going by while I'm hanging on to a palm tree with my 3 young children tethered to me with ropes. Now they're living in Central and North Florida with their own families. All I can do is send them love and peaceful music.

It's so murky, there's not only dirt but debris - debris of all kinds, sizes, shapes, and edges, and not lightweight enough to float. YIKES.

Gosh people! Take care! Be safe! NO unnecessary risks! You'll be a bigger hero (to your loved ones) when you've survived it.

but as long as the hotel was built to code, they should be okay.

You might have tourists (including foreign ones) who couldn't leave right away and you may have some first responders who are holing up there until called into action.

2004 the state got hit with at least 4 hurricanes. I was affected greatly by two in Jax. I moved the next year 2005. Will visit, will never live there again. Just horrible.

DeSantis that the "European “beach nation” of Finland had “spent a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things. And they don’t have any problem.”

Not out of any sense of humor, but to remind him that his and the Republican's support of Trump and their party's pro-coal & oil anti-environment policies are exactly why people are likely to lose their lives today and many certainly will lose their homes. It's a reference to Trump's reactions to California wildfires, where he told us we should've raked the forest to prevent tragedy. I just don't see DeSantis as having any better grip on the situation of climate crisis. I'd not be surprised if in the aftermath he'll push for a "Don't say Global Warming" bill next. It's just so frustrating, and so preventable.

Says this kind of thing happens every year.

Like THIS???? Seriously??????

All those people who thought it wouldn’t be a big deal and now saying they regret not evacuating.
The local guy saying it’s the worst he’s seen in 40 years living there. Mayor of Ft. Myers Beach saying the wind, the rain, the surge is “like nothing I’ve experienced before.”
At 12:40pm the anchor offered a “this just in”: Ian is now “the 5th most powerful hurricane to hit the U.S. - ever.”

But “this happens every year…”

🌴🐊We've had rain all day with some wind gusts...once again it would appear we've ducked a large hurricane.
🌴🐊South of Tampa is having a very bad time of it as you can see. It really is wild to see all of this in real time...as horrific as these videos are, the technology that made this possible is astonishing.🐊🌴
