"Would you trade places with a Black person?"
That's one question that @Race2D founders Regina Jackson and Saira Rao ask their guests white women. They host dinner parties where the main course is open, honest conversation about racism.

YouTube clip (obviously posted so racists could show their racist comments)
Looks like the only way to see the whole documentary is to be in Canada or know how to use VPN.
The comments to the YouTube clip really validated, for me, what the women leading the discussion said.

(11 posts)Are you really taking seriously a movie that fights identity-based prejudice by promoting identity-based prejudice? 7 million people worldwide of all races and ethnicities are named Karen and another 5 million are part of the Karen ethnolinguistic group named Karen. Their name and identity has been stolen and destroyed.
Don't believe it? People are losing jobs, friends, being harassed and even threatened with violence due to having that name. Let's talk about people being stereotyped, villainized and made the butt of jokes until they feel forced to change their names. Let's talk about children and adults pushed to suicide attempts by attacks and gaslighting. Read more at www.karenismyname.org.
And yeah, it's intersectional. Your friend Karen who laughs it off most likely has a good income, professional standing, and strong support from family and friends. She probably doesn't suffer from PTSD or social anxiety or wear a nametag daily in a job she can't afford to leave or have coworkers or family who taunt her or have children afraid to reveal their mom's name to their classmates.
This fiilm - which contains exactly zero characters, actors or producers whose identity is Karen - is profiteering from the mangling of other people's core identities. Although the perpetrators claim to be experts in deconstructing prejudice, they're either extraordinarily shallow or massive hypocritical - or both. And that poisons the whole premise of the film. We need to fight racism, not just redirect hate.

Seriously, this is dumb. It sucks that people were saddled with a name that became a meme, but there are worse injustices out there.
(Having said that, these dinner conversations made the news a couple of years ago, https://www.thecut.com/2021/05/eavesdropping-on-race2dinners-anti-racist-dinner-parties.html

No one is stereotyping all women named Karen simply due to their name, that is a ridiculous construct.

So why is Karen special ?

(15,958 posts)Did you join just to post about this one particular issue? It looks that way, since all of your posts so far have been about the same thing, a lot of it repeats of the same stuff.
I agree that it's unfortunate that a particular name has been singled out to mean something bad. It sucks, and it's definitely not fair to people with that name. However, that ship has sailed, the horse has left the barn, the genie is out of the bottle. There's nothing anyone here can do about it, and berating people in post after post is not going to change that.
I hope you didn't come here just to beat that particular dead horse. (There I go again with the metaphors, lol.) I guess time will tell!

I know many Karen, they are wonderful people. I like to volunteer with field trips and watch people try to remember their names.

I am speaking however of the Karen people who immigrated here. We have the largest community of them in the US. They have names like Ma Bluh, Ler Htoo, La Ri Moo Sa-Htoo...
My wife helps tutor many children.

What is your real concern????

I don't know the backgrounds of those white ladies, either, so it's not very fair to be referring to white women as "Karens", either.
