Fla. CEO calls Ian a nothingburger, and urged her employees to work through

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/09/28/florida-ceo-postcardmania-hurricane-ian/

She told them to work from a car as she herself evacuated. Then she told them they had to work 40 hours this week. As social media outrage worsened, she gave them paid time off. PostcardMania is the name of company. Located in Clearwater.

Doesn’t count as much because she “only” has 300 employees. I’m sure that’s not what you mean though, so it’s probably just me having been awake a little tooooo long now, not reading it right.

She is in her car driving away from us and telling us to keep working,” one employee told The Post. “It just felt wrong. I’m going to have to work and you’re driving in your SUV, taking off.”

Another worker added: “There was a huge disconnect between her and her employees. Not everybody lives in a nice place or in a safe place like her.”

After Monday’s meeting, some employees took to private platforms to vent over Gendusa’s remarks. Others, though, were so upset that they shared their discontent with other colleagues from their desks.

It wasn’t until Tuesday that the company sent a message telling employees that the offices would be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, staffers told The Post. But management said workers must work 40 hours this week. If power went out and they couldn’t work Wednesday or Thursday, they must make up their hours before the end of the week, according to some workers. In response to a question about the 40-hour work requirement, the PostcardMania spokeswoman shared Gendusa’s Wednesday message.

More from the Tampa Bay Times:
The company that Gendusa founded in 1998 has grown to make about $50 million each year and employ 300 people in the Tampa Bay area. PostcardMania has about 73,000 customers in 350 industries and it was ranked 12th among the top midsized companies to work at in Tampa Bay for 2022?s Tampa Bay Times Top Workplaces.

PostcardMania’s focus on productivity and statistics, even in the face of a natural disaster, is reflective of its use of a business management system tied to Scientology, where Gendusa is a longtime member. While the company discloses its use of the system to employees upfront, describing it as a secular tool or “technology” created by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, the implications are not always clear to staff until they are inside.

The business tech says even if there are things outside of your control, you’re responsible for your work, so you have to do something to fix it,” said Amanda Boisen, a former employee who is not a member of Scientology. “You can never explain things as being outside your control.”

As part of the L. Ron Hubbard management system, PostcardMania employees are required to report statistics related to their productivity each week. A similar system is used by Scientology’s full-time workforce, the Sea Org.

Employees are also required to take Scientology courses that the company describes as requirements of the job, according to Jessica Miller, a former employee who is not a parishioner.
