Democratic foe nails Ron DeSantis for the lie that Lee County 'wasn't even in the cone' of Hurricane Ian's path

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) spoke to the press while in Arcadia, Florida on Sunday and claimed that Hurricane Ian wasn't aimed at Ft. Meyers when they were doing evacuations and that they assumed it was going to hit Tampa.
"Well, was your industry stationed when the storm hit? Was it in Lee County? No, you were in Tampa. So, they were following the weather track and they had to make decisions based on that. But, you know, 72 hours they weren't even in the cone. At 48 hours they were on the periphery. So, you've got to make decisions the best you can," said DeSantis, making it seem as if the media was what influenced his decisions for evacuations.
Ali Velshi with MSNBC was stationed in Naples, Florida, which is actually about 44 miles south of Ft. Meyers and over 160 miles south of Tampa.

DeSantis is a liar.

(3,410 posts)We are almost directly across from Ft Myers. You would have to be an idiot, if you were watching the updates, not realize Fort Myers would take a hit.
After 30+ years here, I have learned to follow these hurricanes closely.

(20,148 posts)They're more worried about looting than drowning, and that is just STUPID!!! I see it here in Texas too. Our first responders might be a little more blunt about it though. When they were going door to door on Galvrston Island evacuating before Hurricane Ike, they carried Sharpies. If people refused to leave they gave them the Sharpie and told them to write their name, Social Security number and next of kin on their arm. Most people got the message and left. Galveston and Harris County (Houston) had only 80 orc so deaths.

That's how racism works.

(20,148 posts)And the ONLY thing that matters is LIVING THINGS - people and pets.
I had retired relatives several years ago who lived near a river. Most of the time it was fine, but one time they got a 2 hour warning that the water control department was going to have to open the floodgates to save the levee.
My aunt got right to it, grabbing things that were irreplaceable - family photos and such - as well as some clothes. My uncle stood there dumbfounded.
She yelled "Bobby, grab your best suit and shoes!"
He said "Why on earth do I need a suit?
She said "Because I'm going to bury you in it if you don't get moving!"

(4,390 posts)It was pretty clear that the scatter of the models was higher than recent average and that some of the models were running it towards SWFL. I told her the chances were about 15 percent that an evacaution would be necessary, but that she'd have one day to take action. To her advantage, she lives high up in a big condo on the river, and the only reason I told her to get out was that I thought a direct hit would leave her unable to navigate the surrounding streets for 2-3 days (2 days) due to a 6-9 foot storm surge (10 feet), and I didn't think in her 80s that it was smart to sit in a condo without air conditioning for more than about a day.
All I did to get that was to read three blogs, look at a spaghetti model and the NHC forecasts. It's as complicated as rocket science, but there's internets full of these people called meteorologists who used to work at this place called NOAA.
Trump had his sharpie, but DeSantis appears to still be using the hurricane tracking maps on the paper bags from Publix from when we were kids.
