(7,186 posts)Particularly over the last few decades, taking on the post of home secretary (in charge of national security, policing and immigration) has always tended to bring out the right-wing ideologue in whoever's taken it on.
This has even applied to Labour home secretaries in the past - for instance, David Blunkett and Jack Straw were at one time considered creatures of the left, but they were quite draconian in their terms in office.
In Braveman's case (and Priti Patel, her predecessor), she began at the far-right end of the scale and seems to relish the chance to champion some of the most retrograde and senselessly spiteful policies this country's seen in many a year.
Like so many (well, all) of Truss's cabinet, she has no great record of achievement or evidence of political nous to support her appointment. She was happy to adopt a hard line on an ultra-hard Brexit and all it entails, especially in terms of freedom of movement and immigration, which was enough to get her an entry to power.
You could say she's pandering to the worst among the Tory membership and prospective Tory voters, but in the words of Tony Blair: "It's worse than you think. I really do believe in it."

Whether her anti-trans rhetoric is cynically expressed to gain the support of Tories who think like that, or if she really does hate them that much herself, it's not good to have her as Home Secretary, in charge of criminal law.
