HALIFAX, Nova Scotia Congressional Republican leaders are on track to steamroll the growing number of conservative lawmakers who want to stop funding Ukraines war effort, a move thats sure to intensify the GOP divide over U.S. support for Kyiv.
Interviews with lawmakers who traveled here for the Halifax International Security Forum, an annual pro-democracy conference, revealed that Congress is likely to allocate well more than the $38 billion the Biden administration requested for Ukraines military and economic needs as part of a year-end governing funding bill. And that extra infusion is set to advance with the help of senior Republicans, even as influential conservative groups urge a pause.
If Congress approves the White Houses request or super-sizes it, the U.S. commitment to Kyiv since Russias invasion began in February could top $100 billion by the end of the year a massive sum that would throw a sharp elbow at Donald Trump-aligned Republicans who want to reevaluate U.S. policy toward Ukraine. But as questions swirl over the staying power of the Western coalition, lawmakers message here in Halifax was clear: Now is not the time to scale back the flow of weapons, equipment and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
The top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who co-led the congressional delegation to the conference, downplayed the impact of neo-isolationists within his party and noted that the Hills most powerful GOP lawmakers firmly support additional aid.

(3,489 posts)Russia is our enemy, and the money spent on Ukraine is badly weakening Russia. Plus in terms of the economy, what nations are seeing in Russia will boost US weapons sales. Not many countries are going to be lining up to buy inferior Russian products. Besides boosting the economy, it will strengthen America's world standing both as a moral leader and the country people want to be on the good side of.

U.S. Senator James Risch, a Republican, assures Halifaxs #HFX2022 forum that only a small, small number of 535 members of Congress would fail to support ongoing military aid for Ukraine. The United States of America supports Ukraine and we will stick with them until the end.
Risch travelled to Ukraine and met Zelensky in June: https://www.risch.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/2022/6/risch-meets-with-zelenskyy-in-kyiv
He also wants to go even further in offering support:

Ukraine needs to be provided with F-16 fighters. This was stated by US Senator James Risch. "Someone says, 'Oh no, it's going to escalate.' But listen, when we fought in Vietnam and Korea, the Russians supplied both planes and pilots for our opponents!

(9,287 posts)According to the UN, there are at least 14 million Ukrainian refugees and winter is coming on. A refugee crisis is historically extremely dangerous for regional stability. By waging this ground war in Europe, Putin has caused misery and terror. We need to oppose him and support Ukraine. I am happy the Senator from Idaho clearly understands this threat and Ukraine will be supported by bipartisan votes.
The new Senator from Ohio JD Vance has made it clear he does not support Ukraine and the next Congress may have more Putin tuft-hunters.
