Donald Trump and his allies have ramped up their war against newly appointed special counsel Jack Smith, reviving a playbook they hope will defang the latest unprecedented legal threat bearing down on the former president.

Why it matters: This isn't 2017. The political and legal conditions that allowed Trump to emerge virtually unscathed from Robert Mueller's Russia investigation no longer apply. No amount of mudslinging — or claims he "won't partake" in the investigation — will protect Trump from indictment if Smith determines he has the goods.

"I was described by Steve Bannon ... as a pit bull," former top Mueller prosecutor Andrew Weissman tweeted. "Jack Smith makes me look like a golden retriever puppy."

In 2010, after being criticized for closing corruption cases into members of Congress, Smith told the N.Y. Times: "f I were the sort of person who could be cowed — ‘I know we should bring this case, I know the person did it, but we could lose, and that will look bad,’ I would find another line of work."

rewind to 2016 and rerun the election...but he's no longer that never-before-seen profane name calling media star...four years of Trump decimating the economy, ignoring/downplaying a global pandemic, disappearing 300,000 Covid deaths, sidelining scientists/doctors/epidemiologists in favor of quacks and shamans, altering CDC guidelines, babies in cages, the muslim ban, overt racism/antisemitism, shit hole countries, separating families, insulting our allies, dissing NATO, lying on a grand scale, nepotism, coddling despots, the wall, a cabinet of conmen/opportunists/thieves, enriching his personal bottomline, election interference, inciting an insurrection, stealing classified documents...

Six years and counting, he no longer has Bill Barr covering his ass nor can he sic the I.R.S. on his perceived enemies..he's a known entity, one of the most reviled men on the planet...and Merrick Garland and Jack Smith are impervious to his threats and insults..

when he has not suffered the consequences of anything he has corruptly done HIS ENTIRE LIFE.

Maybe it would be fitting Karma for it to all catch up to him at once, and not in a deluxe, camp cupcake prison.

I am very confident in the fact that he, or any of the hundreds of his cronies will ever spend a single day in confinement.
And that includes the absolute worst criminally complicit ones, the entire Republican Senate, his cabinet, and all of his "advisors"

What happened after more than 32 million dollars spent, the next administration lets the statute of limitation run out. They will not even let the
