Your pollsters and your pundits lied to you.
They told you all the mainstream polls were "skewed".
They told you it was going to be a Romney landslide.
They said their internal polls showed that Romney was ahead, and that Pennsylvania was in play.
They lied.
They did it because they wanted to manipulate you and make sure that you were excited enough to go out and vote. Maybe you understand why they lied, but it should be clear to you by now, that they did indeed lie to you.
They lie to you about other things as well. They definitely lied about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. They are lying to you about climate change. And they constantly lie to you about the income distribution of the tax cuts they propose.
The biggest lies they tell, though, are about us - the liberals. The truth is this:
We believe in hard work, and that it would be best if every able-bodied working age person had a job.
We believe in families; strong families make a strong America.
We believe in the freedom of religion. We would never support a candidate who was openly hostile to Christianity (or Judaism, or Islam, etc.).
We believe in success. Most of us do not favor punitive tax rates for the rich; we just think that middle class and working class families should get extra breaks on their taxes that the rich do not need.
We believe in free enterprise capitalism (well, most of us). Capitalism works through competition, and competition fails when big businesses are allowed to run roughshod over smaller businesses and workers. That's why we favor regulated capitalism instead of a Wild West free-for-all.
Most of all, we believe in America. We love this country and we strive to make it better. We may not always be right about everything, but we are motivated by our love of the country and its people - ALL of its people.
We are your friends and your neighbors. We have jobs, kids, mortgages, bills, honey-do lists, and headaches just the same as you. We aren't the monsters Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck told you we were.
Your pollsters and your pundits lied to you.
I'm telling you the truth.

Sadly, I'm sure the Conservative media will come up with a rationalization which their faithful can believe. Probably something along the lines of, "too many Conservatives skipped voting knowing there was no way in the world the American public could possibly re-elect that man."

I think it is also because Fox news (and indeed the other mainstream news networks) work for profit instead of a genuine desire to report news and facts. They were had because they generate money for the networks, and in fact the networks (and the GOP masters) don't give a rat's ass about most of these people.

There's a part of me that wants to absolutely gloat on Facebook given the number of arguments I've been in over the last 9-12 months. I haven't said a word though, and what you said here is why. I disagree with the positions/rationale/etc. of those on the right, but I don't hate them and I don't think their votes would've "flushed the country down the toilet."

I found myself feeling some genuine sympathy for them; it occurred to me when I could see that quite a few of the posters on these various sites realized they'd been "lied to" as you said.
I suppose it's simply natural human empathy to feel for someone who realizes they've been the mark in a swindle. One thing is for sure; people like Dick Morris, Michael Barone, etc., have completely lost whatever credibility they may have had the Movement Conservatives.
And conservative lurkers, well, what can I say; it's the way the cookie crumbles. C'est la vie.

Those Pollsters Were Right; Were a Much More Democratic County, at Least in Presidential Years
The exit polls indicate a 39 percent Democrat to 33 percent Republican split, only a percentage point behind 2008. I was incorrect in my skepticism that the electorate would be closer to D+3 or D+4. Nate Silver, take a bow. Public Policy Polling, your samples werent as wacky as I believed they were.
The Obama campaign has put together a fantastic get-out-the-vote machine. <snip>
Republicans need to confront the fact that because of demographics and a party infrastructure that has gotten very, very good at bringing out the vote in presidential years, Democrats are going to be very, very tough every four years. <snip>
Ari Fleischer points out the silver lining is that so far, Romney is winning independents. Thats not a silver lining, thats worse news: Democrats dont really need independents anymore. BattleGroundWatch.com

Truth be told your party has cornered the market on the intolerant and the haters. Your news services have pandered to the haters and to the fearful which is why they flocked to your party.
America is moving forward. We The People no longer wish to be ruled by the misogynists the racists the fear mongers and especially not the few ultra rich ultra greedy types who are destroying our democracy.
Your party now has a choice: move to the left and work with us as we see to the needs of We The People, to creating real economic prosperity for all of us and to see to the very environment we all must live in......
.....or you can move further to the right with the haters and the fearful, the racists the misogynists, the religious extremists and the fascists who hate our democracy so much they openly suppressed the votes of over a million of our fellow Americans.
You once parroted the saying: "You are either with us or you are with the terrorists." Well now, let me rephrase it: You are either with us or you are with the sickness.

(999 posts)I have had a hard time articulating how I feel today towards my friends on the right. I have such a sense of outrage over how they have treated us and our president these past four years. I am so tired of the word "liberal" being treated like it was a disease or the name of a terrorist. I have tried to be compassionate and fair to my friends on the right and what i have discovered is that many of them are sore losers and if you try to point out why Romney lost or that the right needs to work with the president they tell you that you are rubbing it in. We spent 8 years in the desert under Bush being called everything from unpatriotic to terrorists for ever questioning the Bush administration and yet this bunch has such a collective bit of amnesia. Sometimes I want to tell them to fuck off but that solves nothing. Your post says it all for me.

(15,774 posts)her conservative Fox news watching grandparent when she was in high school. One weekend, on a bit of a whim, I took her up to Camp Casey out of Bush's ranchette. We helped at the first aid booth and met many many wonderful like minded liberals. Of course, there were many ultra conservatives.
The memory that stuck the most in my daughter's head was a car full of little grandmotherly ladies being called all kinds of vulgar, crude names by folks on the other side of the street. Their crime....they had a peace sticker with a little faded rainbow on their bumper. They drove carefully and their windows were rolled down. I an sure there ears were not spared.
My daughter was so shocked at how ugly those bused in 'counter-protesters' were and how kind those heathen filthy liberals were. We didn't want for anything those three days at Camp Casey. It was like Woodstock, complete with the rain and mud, and the magic.
It ignited the liberal spark in my daughter's heart. She realized that liberals come from a place of love and kindness, not fear and hatered as some conservatives are want to. She has never turned back.
I think once some of these folks can release their fears, they can realize we are not that different in wanting the same things and that we can work together.
The world is changing, We need to change with it if we are to survive.

and one that I ran by the teaheads that I work with today, here is their response....
must be real nice to be liberal. Liberals sure do seem to have all the answers, free healthcare, free obamaphones, welfare, WIC, Medicare and Medicaird, Social security no problems with any of these programs because the people already pay for them it's your money that you put in and the governmnet owes you that, so what if it runs up the debt, lets give more unemployment extensions, lets help all the poor, how about free internet, how about more subsidy for student loans, lets give more grants for education, we need more teachers and more schools and hell they need to be paid more and lets unionize all the city and state workers so they can force taxpayers to pay more for their salaries and pensions, etc, more inner city and youth social programs, more spending to help the homeless, lets help all the people, lets heal the planet lets have government issue carbon taxes and we can just replant the deforested areas, living wage for all, and we will do all this by taxing the rich, those evil rich don't pay their fair share now so by having the government tax them we will make sure they pay, right? and those rich won't find otherways to get the money back that government takes in taxation no they are evil but they know when they are outmatched by the government, they wouldn't dare increase the costs of the goods and services that they own the production of no, they wouldn't dare lay off workers or move jobs overseas to lower their costs and increase their profits, no certainly they will sit right here and eat the tax increase because they also must be taught that this will make us all a nice caring and loving society.
Then this ....
"You really don't have a clue that this country is 16 trillion in debt and the trajectory of the debt due to social spending is going to destroy our currency in the next 10-15 years, complete collapse of the American economy, you live in your liberal talking points that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is what caused the debt but you don't have a clue."
Then they tell me to go to some website usdebtclock or something and say see for yourself what is happening.....
So they pretty much are set in their ways and won't be trying to come together for the greater good anytime soon, I mean as far as supporting any type of social programs go... In fact one of them was spouting off how they think Obama is about to make a hard right turn politically to create some kind of Presidential legacy and that he is going to do exactly what the Republicans want him to do to deal with the debt....
All I said is don't count your chickens you were wrong about the polls too.... LOL

(16,245 posts)I would quibble with two things:
I would instead say that there is more than one way to make a family, and also that we believe in the choice not to have a family at all.
I would also say that we believe in freedom of religion, but also freedom FROM religion. Religion is for the private sphere, not the public. Atheist are equally moral and committed to making this country great and should be encouraged to serve openly in public life. There is no religious test for public office.

(78 posts)To my conservative friends, let us work together:
To my pro-life friends, let's make contraceptive education available to everyone and let us work together so that all babies, infants, and toddlers have ease of access to comprehensive medical care.
To my pro-gun friends, let us work together to de-stigmatize mental healthcare and expand access to such services.
To my "Support the Troops" friends, let us work together to expand both physical and mental healthcare for our veterans and our troops, returning home and those serving abroad. Let war always be the last, somber course of action.
To my friends at risk of foreclosure: let us reinstate Glass-Steigel and expand Dodd-Frank so that financial institutions cannot run rampant with our money, again.
To my pro-oil friends: let us invest in renewable energy sources and a smart electricity grid so that not only will the United States be protected against foreign oil influence, but each one of us and our houses will be protected against large-scale blackouts and temporary inoperable neighborhood gas stations.
To my budget-hawk friends: I agree with you! In order to get our deficit under control we need to set in place a comprehensive audit of our budget, recognize with unbiased eyes waste and redundancies that won't affect the quality or services provided, and understand that taxes are how we pay for things and those who are sharing less of the burden than others should pay equally.
To my friends worried about jobs: We need to bring outsourced jobs back to the States and make sure those companies are paying all their employees fairly. Not only should our products be stamped with "Proudly made in the U.S.A." but also "Proudly made in" Delaware, Oklahoma, Alabama, Nebraska, or whichever state that product comes from.
To my religious friends: let us work together to help the poor, the disenfranchised, the sick, and those the least among us. Your faith to you is grander than politics so don't get bogged down in the inner machinations of the country, but work compassionately with olive branch extended, not the sword.
To my Republican friends: Let us work together to make our voices ring during times of election. Let us reinstate and strengthen McCain-Feingold, call for a Constitutional Amendment declaring 'natural citizenship' and reversing Citizens United. Let each voting district own their own voting machines instead of a private company and make sure the source code is open access. Nobody should be waiting in line for over an hour. Let us make it an actual constitutional right to be allowed to vote for President and Vice President.
To all my friends: We are a nation of big ideas as well as freedom and individualism. We should not lose sight of the vision for a grander America. Those services we want to use we should have and those we don't use should be there if we decide to. It's not about the next bill, the next election, or the next 4 years, it's about what kind of country and responsibilities we want to pass on to our children. And always we should ask if our actions help expand our individual freedom.
America can be greater but only if we all work together.

You said exactly what needs to be said, and I wish this could be in every newspaper in America.
It wont change the rabid right wing, but it would change the thinking, thoughtful republicans.
There are some out there, I just wish they would stand up against the lunacy that's taken over their party.
Very well written, you get a gold star for today.
(First grade we would get them, I would stick mine on my forehead)

(3,186 posts)I hope you will consider submitting this to your local, and other newspaper(s). It tells the truth w/out being condescending. Most people (particularly moderate types) are more willing to listen to points of view that perhaps are a bit left of theirs, if said POV's are communicated respectfully.
After all, we couldn't have pulled off the victories we saw on Tuesday, if it were not for these swing/centrist types. Now that we've got them, we want to keep them. (And perhaps even gently convert them over time. )
Your words set the right tone to do just that. Well done!

(3 posts)I've been lurking around DU for about 5 months now. I'm 20 and this was my first election. Icome from a very strong democratic family and they've always been very open to everyone's beliefs and let me make up my own mind. I tried to get my info from as many sources as possible to be fair to both sides. ill spare you guys my beliefs but I agree with most everything here. gay marriage, women's rights, healthcare.. etc. I'm a business student and I believe very much a strong economy is necessary to drive our country, I'm ashamed to admit I bought into the fear mongering and I voted with my fear and wallet instead of my heart and head. you guys seemed so calm but everyone else seemed so panicked and their ignorance just sucked me into that somehow the entire economy would explode the second Obama was re-elected. there was that moment. and I don't know if any of you have had it, when you realize you listened to chicken little and you feel like an idiot. your post caught my eye. I'm no conservative, but I knew what you were saying, and I'm so glad that you guys understand we make mistakes and that some people have to make that mistake just so they can feel stupid and learn from it

(2,638 posts)we were all there once ... my first vote was for Nixon lol it took me a little time to learn the difference between Repubs and Dems and once I did I sure felt dumb. I've been true blue since and figured out that it was important to vote a straight Dem ticket from the top on down.
The cool thing was that I was able to educate my parents on the difference (we were immigrants and naturalized citizens) and they voted straight Dem after that as well!
Welcome to DU!!

(1,451 posts)They live in the Republican Bubble of Faux News!!!! While the world is changing they can only hear the noise in the Bubble!!!!! I will feel sorry for them when they feel sorry for lying and being ridiculous enough to be mislead,

(202 posts)They may not be listening now but some will likely try to figure out what went wrong. Some may see this post and reflect.
I would like to hope that there will be some Republicans who will question their parties policies and rhetoric. However, I fear that some at least are going to double down on their rhetoric. Particularly, I fear that the Tea Party members in the House and Senate will be as obstinate as they have been in the past two years.

(1,451 posts)has cemented the door shut to the no knowledge in please Republican Bubble, they will be this way!!! The longer they are this way the much more diverse, strong, and receptive of change, the Democratic party becomes!!! I like that thought!!!!
Expressed exactly what I have been thinking!
