To each his (own) taste.
Morphed commonly in some backwaters to "chacun a son gout" (each to his own taste). My brief stint of learning French was European, not Canadian. |

45. "Chacun a" is how I learned conversationally when I lived in France for a year
"A chacun" is more literary, that might be preferred in books or more formally, but I never heard that construction when I was in France.
To be fair, that was decades ago, and such things change over time. |

5. IMO
a certain percentage of DU is depressed and has other mental issues.
But then, so does the U.S. population as a whole. I just wish they wouldn't come on this board and project their negative point of view, prognosticating that trump will never be held to account; Santos either. I think it's a form of acting out but it has the overall effect of making other posters feel like the state of affairs is hopeless. I don't like to see that because nothing's perfect and that's our job as humans: to make things better. The majority of people give a fair assessment in their opinions, however. OTOH, most republicans are out and out sociopaths, and I am not exaggerating. The rubes who vote for them are suckers. So I'll take a percentage of people depressed over The Criminal Party any day. |

25. that's an example
after you read an example, you're supposed to extrapolate.
Also, it's not the POV, it's the consistent negativity, the complete and total hopelessness. It's the same people, over and over and over. It almost always takes the form of prognostication. If you fit into that category, just think about your effect on the overall cause. Consider the fact that a message board is not the appropriate outlet for such feelings. I'm not talking just about DU, I'm talking about any political message board. There is a mental health forum here. Perhaps that is an appropriate outlet. |

Excellently stated.
Yes, as the stressors in the world increase in number and severity some will turn to sarcasm as a means of coping, while others will have no patience for anything but clear and sincere communication. And then there’s the group who rely on their own pessimism to see themselves through, constantly guarding themselves from any possible disappointment. They are to be pitied. There’s also, unfortunately, the type who intentionally spread negativity as a means of subtle mind control, sapping our energy and making it more difficult to effect positive change in the world. They are to be shunned. |

7. A lot of people cognitively cannot comprehend sarcasm
Well, for some it's something in their dna, for others it's cultural. Brits tend to use sarcasm a lot, so they are better at picking up on it. But not all Brits...
America isn't nearly as big on sarcasm, so even people who could learn simply aren't exposed to it enough. |

Sarcasm is hard to do on the internet, especially when you also are not acquainted with the person expressing the thought.
And with the outlandish crap hitting the fan for real lately, some stuff is hard to distinguish. I was all worked up about something to do with a Medicare/Social Security program and it turned out to be just a hypothesis. Yes, I am wound too tight. But that hypothesis COULD have been real. And that’s what was scary. |

there are those here who actively look for posts to alert on because they don't like the poster's point of view. So the sarcasm thingy is needed for clarification.

35. When someone
Misinterprets something as real, and it involves some new Republican legislation-from-hades, then a sarcasm tag is needed.
I was tripped up by a post on a Social Security/Medicare “pilot” program. Turns out it was a harmless joke. It shook me up because I know that is something The Republicans are eager to do, cut the social safety net. A sarcasm tag would have been helpful. I researched the topic and determined there was no proposed pilot program. At 69, this kinda stuff is scary as 💩. ![]() |
