Three weeks and 38 mass shootings. This is America in 2023.
It's the guns.
A study published late last year in JAMA Network Open analyzed firearm deaths over the past three decades – a total of more than 1 million lives lost since 1990. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/23/politics/mass-shootings-in-2023-what-matters/index.html

1. Nothing will be done. That is also America in 2023.
There isn't even any hope of anything being done. Hell, we can't even realistically hope that the status quo simply holds. The unethical, unprofessional, and unaccountable Roberts Court will probably make things even worse.

10. The gun violence serves a purpose, the GOP will not give it up.
The GOP creates chaos, danger, fear, hatred.
Serves to keep a population docile and apathetic. This is the basis of autocratic forms of government. |

16. I have a SLIGHTLY less cynical opinion
Gun violence is simply the logical and inevitable result of allowing mass gun sales so the gun industry can profit.

19. Don't forget that Putin funded the NRA. So it is more than profit.
There is more to it. Much much more, the GOP benefits from installing fear into the population.
But don't worry on the cynicism front, most people have a way to go to catch up to me. ![]() |

17. nothing can get done because the GOP is afraid to piss off the RW radio stations that get them elect
elected, and because democrats ignore those radio stations, and what they repeat after all mass shootings
every time these mass murders happen those stations go on red alert defending the NRA and blaming the shooter and liberals calling for gun control and defunding police and making sure everyone has to be able to own assault weapons a few hundred ignorant racists and assholes still imitating limbaugh on 1500 radio stations reaching 50 mil a week, saying whatever they want because all that repeated lying, exaggeration, and rationalization is UNCHALLENGED BY DEMOCRATS AND GUN CONTROL ADVOCATES. and we ignore some amazing opportunities, such as ignoring that the uni of syracuse, 150 miles from the buffalo shooting supports 9 NRA stations - 6 ex limbaugh and 3 others this would be a lot closer to over if the parkland protestors didn't ignore that 5 fla unis support 20 NRA stations. its ridiculous. |

20. The GOP controls the radio stations.
They could turn around the gun issue if they wanted.
In a short amount of time. They don't want to. |

24. the gop used to control the radio stations but the kremlin pulled limbaugh/rw radio away from establ
establishment GOP at least back in 2008 with the tea party and breitbart and paul manafort got limbaugh to hold his support for mccain until he picked palin. the russians used limbaugh to push palin on mccain and the rove/bush GOP establishment though he cost them the election. after that the Russians kept using him - for creating 'climategate' in 2009 and pushing debt ceiling default in 2011 and then heavy duty radicalization of republicans to election of limbaugh's neighbor and golf partner trump
they became the party of limbaugh and now they're headless and grieving and afraid of the gun nuts. they have depended heavily on parroting rw radio to get elected and still do and the dittoheads/teabags/trumpers/gun nuts call in to make sure the blowhards don't start wavering on gun control maybe now that central control is gone maybe enough GOP can join in but as long idiots like cruz etc can filibuster there's little hope the best way is for the Dem Party or an allied org to announce it's going to use the MIT prototype to digitize RW radio present and in retrospect and the cons will start abandoning ship |

25. Yes the US media is a propaganda arm of the Kremlin.
Some say the US is a Russian vassal state.
Look at Germany, same thing. The Germans really don't want to help Ukraine, they align with Putin. I think the US leaned on them to cough up the tanks, but first Germany wouldn't budge until Poland had agreed to give them some money for weapons. You can see why Putin thought invading Ukraine was a cake walk. His puppets installed in western democracies had his back. Didn't turn out that way completely. I don't know how all of this will end. Can we fight back? Or has the US gone too far down the rabbit hole? |

26. IMO it started with talk radio and by 2008 allowing further radicalization of the GOP by putin
through point liar limbaugh. those radio stations are what keep the GOP pols in line on self destruct. and russians are using radio around the world.
but that could end quickly if dems/americans merely used AI to digitize and analyze samples of that propaganda operation so it can be read and analyzed and is no longer invisible. if dems stop ignoring rw radio media will be encouraged to stop ignoring it too, and do some research. as long as democrats and progressives ignore rw radio the doomsayers are misguided and too pessimistic or trolls |

27. Yep. The hate talk radio was everywhere.
Even on military bases.
Controlling the flow of information is right from the KGB handbook. Yes it is puzzling why we don't fight back. Yes it is so hard to see ruthless evil take over. But also hard to see so little fight against it. Certainly if we can see it, so can the people who get paid to notice Russia taking over our media. I didn't understand your last sentence about the doomsayers? |

And the reality is not pretty.
I have been a political junkie since JFK ran against Nixon. That means I have seen a lot. I think the current situation is quite serious and disturbing. And I keep saying so. Not to make people give up, but to start fighting back. |

6. The changed definition of a "mass shooting" has racial undertones
When the Republican-Owned Media redefined the term mass shooting a few years ago, the number of victims was reduced to 4. Before that, the victim counts that qualified as mass shootings were in the teens or higher. And the shooters were predominantly white men. As a result of redefinition, the number of mass shooting occurrences — not total victims — has skyrocketed. And mass shooters have gone from white to mostly black or POC. |

count as a mass shooting decreased because it helps to highlight the gun problem.
