Trump Blasts Charles McGonigal After Arrest: 'Rot In Hell'
BY EWAN PALMER
Newsweek, 1/24/23
Donald Trump reacted with glee after a former FBI official who was involved in the investigation into the alleged ties between the former president's 2016 campaign team and Russia was arrested.
Charles McGonigal, 54, the former head of counterintelligence for the FBI's New York office, is accused of secretly working for a U.S.-sanctioned Russian oligarch, Oleg Deripaska, as well as conspiring to commit money laundering.
Prosecutors said that McGonigal is alleged to have tried to help Deripaska get off the sanctions list after leaving the FBI in 2018. He is also alleged to have taken money off the Russian billionaire in 2019 in order to investigate a rival oligarch.

In a post on Truth Social after the Department of Justice announced the charges, Trump said: "The FBI guy after me for the Russia, Russia, Russia HOAX, long before my Election as President, was just arrested for taking money from Russia, Russia, Russia. May he Rot In Hell!"

Trump pursued a deal in Russia and hid it from voters
Candidate misled voters about 'nothing to do with Russia.' He signed a Trump Tower Moscow letter on the day of a presidential debate
The Editorial Board
USA TODAY, January 22, 2019
Excerpt
During much, if not all, of Trump's campaign he sought to enrich himself by pursuing a luxury hotel-condominium-office deal in Russia known as Trump Tower Moscow.
And as a candidate, Trump repeatedly misled or lied to voters about his business with Russia. "I have nothing to do with Russia," he told reporters in July 2016. "I don't deal there," he said during the Oct. 9 presidential debate.
The truth is, Trump had coveted a lucrative hotel project in Russia whether to build one or license his name to be emblazoned on a skyscraper for decades. "We will be in Moscow at some point," he said in a 2007 deposition.
Later, as a presidential candidate, he secretly signed an 18-page letter of intent for Trump Tower Moscow on Oct. 28, 2015, the day of the third Republican presidential debate.
Court filings by Mueller in November make clear that negotiations led by Trump lawyer Michael Cohen continued through at least June 2016. Cohen lied about this to Congress to "give the false impression that the Moscow Project ended before 'the Iowa caucus and ... the very first primary,' " according to the filings.
You have to wonder what the fallout would have been if those negotiations had been exposed before Trump debated his Republican primary opponents or Hillary Clinton. The electorate certainly was robbed of knowing about this crucial information at a time when:
►There were news reports that Russia was interfering in the election.
►Trump was expressing praise and admiration for President Vladimir Putin, even as he was insulting hundreds of other people, places and things on Twitter.
►The candidate said that, as president, he would consider easing sanctions placed against Russia for its violent seizure of Crimea.
►Trump was questioning America's continued role in NATO, a bulwark against Russian aggression that Putin has historically despised.
►A plank in the GOP platform regarding U.S. support for Ukraine was watered down.
►Trump challenged Moscow to release Democratic emails that Russians were reported to have hacked.
How does the president explain the appearance of a quid pro quo? By claiming that he was just keeping his options open. "There was a good chance that I wouldn't have won," Trump said in November, "in which case I would have gotten back into the (real estate development) business. And why should I lose lots of opportunities?"

(30,998 posts)I think he knows damn well that this corruption is why he was never prosecuted. What you said, he hates that the traitor got caught. The way the story is being reported, makes it seem like he was caught on some sort of technicality, not the taking of the massive bribes to be a traitor, which is what his real crime is

(33,643 posts)He's previously stated in so many words that the FBI field office in NYC were the one's responsible for forcing his hand right before the 2016 election to report to Congress that the FBI were reopening the Clinton Email Investigation cause of some laptop.
I'd definitely like to know if this guy specifically ... was a main driver of that.
At least an outfit like slate, vanity fair or mother jones could look into an interview with him on the subject. I expect ZERO from the M$M, of course.
This is an obvious attempt by IQ45 to 'get ahead' of the story, to set the narrative. By lying in a whole bunch of places, as always.

(33,643 posts)Why would a guy taking illegal bribes from a prominent Russian oligarch ... want to turn around and make Russia appear complicit in US election interference? Much more logical to presume he'd do the opposite. Which I strongly suspect is what he actually did.
But then, it's always all about gaslighting the public and owning the libs, and this is perfectly in line with that goal.

I had an associate with me who was getting some CLE for this training and I saw that he was upset during the course. On the way back to the office, I was told about Comey announcing the reopening of the Clinton email investigation. That reopening with the NYT article that the FBI found no connection between Russia and TFG were the final nails.
The NYT is not a real news organization and the NYC office of the FBI was full of Clinton haters some of whom were working directly for Russia
