Michigan Capitol grounds may soon become a gun-free zone
The Michigan Capitol may become the states latest gun-free zone, with an anticipated total firearm ban expected in the coming months.
Members of the Capitol Commission voted unanimously on Monday, Feb. 27, to develop a plan for enhanced security measures that would, among other things, result in a total firearm ban on Capitol grounds.
Rob Blackshaw, executive director of the Michigan State Capitol Commission, will be responsible for putting together the report with input from other organizations such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Michigan State Police and the federal Transportation Security Administration.
As part of this plan, physical security measures could be implemented, though what those specifically could look like remain to be seen. Blackshaw told MLive he was in the process of beginning to reach out to vendors in to get an understanding of the different types of equipment that are out there before beginning to lay out a plan.
