Dignity: Of Earth & Sky

Women's History Month

She casts a peaceful gaze across the waters of the Missouri River. During the day, the South Dakota wind brushes the diamonds in her star quilt, causing blue shades to twinkle in the sunlight. At night, she stands illuminated and strong. She is Dignity.

“Dignity represents the courage, perseverance and wisdom of the Lakota and Dakota culture in South Dakota,” Lamphere said. “My hope is that the sculpture might serve as a symbol of respect and promise for the future.”

Their culture was of no importance to those who only wanted what they had and they took it with no regard to understand the First Americans. That attitude is still pervasive today.

She donated n coresponded and even began studying their traditions. She got very involved and was like a convert. Then she began studying other tribes n their traditions n we use to sit n talk about what she was doing n what she was learning. It’s wonderful to know the children are being taught their languages n traditions as their desire is to know their past so their future children will carry on, too. I’ll send her the picture of the statue n the story behind it..she’ll like it a lot.
