Listening to the discussion on MoJo about women delaying or not having children. SMH

Come on folks. After Roe, after Trump, and after the GQP taking over the House set to possibly take over the Senate, and after governors like DeSantis set to possibly become President... what woman in her right mind would want to bring a child into this world with so much hate and vitriol? With all this loss of pride in compassion, movements away from diversity, rampant corrupt law enforcement, unequal pay and treatment against women and people who are different from white RW males.

My granddaughter who turned 18 last month told me in no uncertain terms she has no desire to have children because she has witnessed so much bullying and racism and sexism in her years from middle school through high school. She wants to get her BA and move out of the country as soon as she can determine a place to live. She has received a full ride scholarship to a major university here and feels obligated to complete her education here. She is of mixed race and has several LBGTQ friends and a few white friends who feel the same way she does. Most of her friends despise the politics of their parents and want to get away from them as soon as possible. AND they all feel they have little hope of good paying jobs and their ability to move out on their own staying in the USA.

I would not even try to challenge her thinking. I am just so depressed with the turn our country has taken against all that we had built our hopes and dreams on. She also told me that her friend group now eligible to vote will vote only for a candidate who is FOR gun control laws. Environment is still on the table for them but gun issues are number one on their list. Take it for what it's worth.

Everything for "her" to prevent pregnancies will be banned. Reference is "her, she, woman, girl". But in the meantime, "his" such as condoms, prophylactics, rubbers, vasectomies, etc will be fully legal.

Got it.

I don't care whether I was 22 or 52. I never wanted to have kids because the males I knew before I reached my early forties were not reliable enough to be parents and I never wanted to be tied to a man permanently because of a child I might have had biologically with one of them. I never got pregnant until I was 46 or so (one of those menopausal oopsies). My husband already had two adolescent boys and didn't want an additional child, so we chose together to terminate the pregnancy. I've never regretted it.

It's unfortunate for that to be true.

I've thought for a long time that no one in their right mind would bring children into this world, and it has only gotten worse.

It's depressing to think about.

I have heard this from many young couples......they say: Who in their right minds would want to bring an innocent party into this mayhem.........

It made me flash back to a comment made by Colorado Governor Dick Lamm may he RIP. He wrote an article forty years ago, about it being the first generation to experience having less than their parents and what a tragedy that was............He said that in all previous generations, that the next generation had always done better than their parents......It is far worse now..............

It's not for everyone, and the risks are huge, but while Sophie Scholl lost her life at the age of 21 - she was beheaded - she won the war.

Our children and grandchildren realize they have no choice -- mine have told me this -- when already they see how world entities have not done enough to mitigate climate upheavals, and how we as a society have not dealt in a timely way with climate denier industries and worshippers of Mammon.

If a better world is possible, the young are among the ones working to make it happen. In the meantime, they're right not to bring children into a world with no visible present commitment to that better world for its descendants.

We need to stop being shocked, sad and worried, and start channeling our money, time and effort into forward looking projects and politics.

"The U.S. government doesn’t formally track how many Americans leave the U.S. but the most recent estimate puts the figure at nearly nine million. This figure represents a doubling of the 1999 figure, placed at 4.1 million. The number of expats has more than doubled in the last fifteen years — a number growing faster than the rate of the U.S. population itself."

https://www.aetnainternational.com/en/about-us/explore/living-abroad/culture-lifestyle/where-are-Americans-emigrating-to-and-why.html

Interesting that the US does not track how many people leave but that it's higher than the birth rate.

I would leave if I was younger. Just to give my kids a better life.

I know we are told how great the US economy is but emigration rates increase during economic downturns. The Republican Great Depression snd Great Recession caused a lot of people to leave.

breaks my heart. The very sad truth is unfortunately this is where we are. This is one of the real costs of there being no line of reasonableness anymore. In our culture there used to be a line that only outliers would cross politically and culturally. As I see it that line has significantly moved and is fading altogether.

It seems that some on the right have lost the melody to the metaphorical the song.

If you’re buried in college loans and not earning a hefty income, having kids is costly. I think estimates are about $18,000 per year to raise a child. Biden’s program to forgive loans might actually help more younger people decide to have children, something Republicans claim to want but always vote against any policies that support parents and children.

the point where young adults aren't deciding to get married and have kids because it's the next developmental box to be checked. And no, I'm not suggesting that everybody who has kids has them for that reason. I just know too many people who are struggling to fit kids into the lifestyle they want to live. Much to the detriment of the kids being raised by proxies whose parents show up periodically to "make memories."

I worry about the future for others but it would be even worse if they were my own.

I can certainly understand why they do no want to stay here. Do Scandanavian countries take immigrants? Is New Zealand letting anyone move there? There are limits for options. The environment is an issue all over the world.
