David Lindley, guitarist best known for work with Jackson Browne, dies at 78

David Lindley, a multitalented guitarist who was a fixture in Los Angeles recording studios during the 1970s and ’80s, died on Friday. He was 78.

A source close to Lindley confirmed his death to The Times.

After founding the psychedelic folk-rock group Kaleidoscope in 1966, Lindley supported many of the biggest stars of the era, establishing himself as a sought-after session musician through his work with Jackson Browne. After playing a prominent part on Browne's "For Everyman" (1973) and "Late for the Sky" (1974), Lindley came to the forefront on 1977's multiplatinum "Running on Empty," playing an indelible lap steel solo on the album's title track and sharing lead vocals on the hit cover version of Maurice Williams' "Stay." Lindley also played on Linda Ronstadt's "Heart Like a Wheel" and Warren Zevon's eponymous 1976 album, while also appearing on records by Crosby & Nash, Rod Stewart and Ry Cooder.

Americana singer-songwriter and guitarist Jason Isbell tweeted, "The loss of David Lindley is a huge one. Without his influence my music would sound completely different. I was genuinely obsessed with his playing from the first time I heard it. The man was a giant."

We saw him pushing mostly bouzouki/octave mandolin in an outdoor, summertime concert along with Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Hornsby and headliner, Jackson Browne about 20 years ago.

He was a fine musician with plenty of chops.

I left my home on Long Island earlier that summer to hitchhike across the country alone. It was sort of a quest I was making, with almost nothing in the way of pre-made plans. On the way back from the west coast I landed in Santa Fe for a few days, then made it to Albuquerque. I think somewhere in between Jackson Browne gave an open air, night time concert with just David Lindley accompanying him. I swear it was one of the most magic concerts I've ever attended, and I've attended a lot. The night was warm, the sky was clear, the stars were out, and the music those two men made together was sublime. It was a summer filled with important memories for me, but that concert still stands out among the brightest of them all. They called it a Jackson Browne concert but it was just as much a David Lindley one. They both brought each song to life. I am sorry he is no longer with us, but his music is.

I've been listening to his guitar (mainly through Jackson Browne) since the 70s. He was so incredibly talented, especially playing slide, and his falsetto on Stay is magical. Some years after college, I moved back to Claremont CA for several years and lived a few blocks from his house. The music store in town had walls covered with his guitars and other unique instruments he had loaned to the store for display. I got to see him play with his band, El Rayo-X, at the San Juan Capistrano Coach House in the late 80s. Great show, and lots of fun in a cool, smaller venue. They put out an album called Very Greasy in 1988. Every song is wonderful, including the covers of Werewolves of London and Papa was a Rolling Stone. I still listen to it every once in a while.
