Thousands of Afghan women in peril as Taliban voids their divorces, experts say
Taliban law now considers many remarried women to be adulterers, former judges and lawyers say.

KABUL — After her stepfather sold her into marriage at the age of 13 to support his drug habit, the young Afghan woman fought for years to escape an abusive husband. She eventually fled his home, secured a divorce and remarried, she recalled.

Now, under Taliban rule, she’s suddenly on the run again, at risk of imprisonment for adultery.

Under the previous government, this woman from western Afghanistan could get a divorce by testifying that her first husband was physically abusive, even though he refused to appear before the judge. But under the Taliban’s draconian interpretation of Islamic law, her divorce is invalid and, as a result, so is her second marriage.

Former judges and lawyers estimate that thousands of Afghan women who earlier secured divorces without a husband’s consent are now in danger under Taliban rule, facing potential imprisonment and violent reprisals.

6. Patriarchy says: Men are not adulterers. Only women are. Men own women.

If you haven't internalized this male tendency (gross exaggeration, but common truth) yet, re-read this headline: religion has always existed to suppress women. To make them 2nd class citizens. Automatically, that puts ALL men ahead of half the population.

This is a vestigial remnant of our darwinian evolution: and men are so accustomed to it, they don't accept their own privilege and their own investment in the assumption that men should be in charge of women.

But that's what ALL of the current BS anti-lgbtq and abortion and contraception and drag laws are really about: owning all the women.

They will try to take our vote. Wake up and catch on. They will try to take our vote.

We don’t know for a fact that ancient humans were a male dominated patriarchal society. Archeological research is current re-evaluating this theory.

What we do know is that with the rise of male gods as the creators of all, women have been consistently written out of history and suppressed.

8. Yes, it is interesting that ancients did recognize the power of women to create and nurture

life. I assume the patriarchy is a reaction to that. Of course they want to control that power, since it threatens them.

9. Joseph Campbell's book: The Power of Myth.

He addressed those issues indirectly in the book. Boys go on quests to prove their manhood. They have initiation rituals that frequently involve cutting and bleeding. Again to prove they are men.

Woman doesn’t need either quests or ritual initiations to prove womanhood. When she has her first period she is a woman.

The first gods were all Goddesses. Only the female can bring forth new life. Men, even if subconsciously, are deeply envious of this.

There is a lot more available but even a cursory reading of the Old Testament finds the men along with their male gods, engaged in a fierce fight to suppress the Goddess and thus suppress the power of women.

10. I love your take on this: Women are the real creators: Ordinary women. Religion is a male

attempt to control that power. When you see that the major concerns of all religions are sex and procreation, it all gets so simple: They need their gods to steal our power of creation. Any "uppity", powerful, strong women are a threat to their attempt to take our creating powers from us. That's what all the lgbtq and gay and abortion and contraception laws are really about: CONTROL.

13. Read this. For years historians have refused to acknowledge a woman may be the first author.

Inanna ( Ishtar) was the ordinal Mother/ Goddess of Creation. She had many names and was the main Goddess of all. At this point in history she still exists but had been demoted to just one in a pantheon of gods with the male god of creation replacing her role.

A slow process of assimilation and eventually disappearing the female goddess from the region.
