Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan won't challenge Trump in 2024

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Larry Hogan, the former Republican governor of Maryland who positioned himself as one of his party's fiercest critics of Donald Trump, said Sunday he will not challenge the ex-president for the GOP's White House nomination in 2024.

“I would never run for president to sell books or position myself for a Cabinet role,” the 66-year-old Mr. Hogan wrote in The New York Times. “I have long said that I care more about ensuring a future for the Republican Party than securing my own future in the Republican Party. And that is why I will not be seeking the Republican nomination for president.”

The move is a recognition that while many in the GOP are considering ways to move on from the Trump era, there is little appetite among primary voters for such a vocal critic of the former president. Other prominent Trump adversaries, including former Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, don't appear to be making moves toward a campaign at the moment.

For now, that leaves Mr. Trump as the leading figure in the early field of Republican candidates. So far, he faces just three formal challengers: his former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and Michigan businessman Perry Johnson. Others, including former Vice President Mike Pence, ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, may join in the coming months. Some, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, could wait until late summer to officially announce their campaigns.

Hogan is not a bad guy, at least compared to what is out there among R elected officials. But, he's no Democrat and has no future as an independent, apparently.

On the other hand, I believe there's NO CHANCE of Chump getting re-elected in 2024 or any other year. But if Hogan were to run in the primary, and if he were to snatch the nomination, it would be a good sign that the Repuke Party is trying to get back to normal again.

Silly me, why would I think that could ever happen?

“I have no intention of seeking the nomination as a level-headed pragmatist when most of my party demands deranged ideologues. I’d have about as much of a chance as I would of fitting an adult blue whale into my fish bowl.”

Is it becoming safe to assume that the Republican race to the bottom will be either Trump or DeSantis? Is there someone hiding in the wings that could impress the Republican electorate?

I don't believe that the judicial system has time left to prevent Trump from running, though natural processes may. ( I would love to believe that it is possible that Trump takes a natural ride across the Jordan before election time) After all, he is old, out of shape and lives on garbage food. His arteries have to look like hell. (I mean of course, for the healthiest former President ever)

Even if DeSantis won the nomination, he'd only carry maybe 5 or 6 states in the general election. Am I right?

Chump does have more national followers than DeSantis, but he has lost so many since 1/6/21 that it's heard to believe the Party would want him as their candidate. I don't get it.

In 2016 his rallying cry was, "What have you got to lose?" Well in 2024, they already KNOW the answer to that question.

Republicans nationwide adore DeSantis, and look to Florida as a model state.

As to him carrying 5 or 6 states, I once wrote a lengthily post about this. Neither Party will ever have a true landslide again, where one side wins over 40 states and gets over 400 Electoral Votes. We are way too divided now. The days of 1964, 1972, 1980, 1984, and 1988 are long over.
