NM Senate passes first major gun control law of session

The bill is one of several gun control measures lawmakers are considering in this year's 60-day legislative session and the first to pass both chambers. The bill now has to go back to the House for concurrence because it was amended in the Senate.

HB 9 says a gun owner would be liable if the firearm is kept or stored "in a manner that negligently disregards a minor's ability to access" the weapon. Supporters have dubbed the bill the Bennie Hargrove Act, in honor of Hargrove, a 13-year-old from Albuquerque who was shot and killed in 2021 by another student who took a gun to school.

Other significant gun control bills that have been introduced this year, such as ones imposing a 14-day waiting period on gun purchases and an assault weapons ban, have been through committee hearings but have not gotten a full floor vote in either chamber yet.

Yes, Virginia, things are changing. State legislatures are standing up. The legal system is standing up.

It's all thanks to YOU and me. We drive this. If you aren't part of this become a part and if you are congratulations for making a difference.
