In particular, Avlon warned viewers against writing Trump off even though his power over the Republican Party appears to have diminished in recent months.
"It is easy to treat Trump as a side show because if you look at his, you know, posts on Truth Social, if you look at that rambling, 145-minute lie-filled speech, you'd say this is someone that is not well," he said. "Yet, we need to concede he's the front-runner for the Republican nomination and the more crowded the primary is, the more likely he is to win."
Avlon also said it would be a mistake to focus too much on Trump's verbal provocations given the other dangers he poses to the health of the American republic.
"He is somebody who is under multiple investigations right now, somebody who tried to overturn out democracy," Avlon noted. "But that is not a disqualifier in today's Republican Party. So I think we need to be wide-eyed about that right now."

(22,031 posts)Trump hasnt changed in over 40 years. Everything hes done since the infamous elevator ride is behavior he exhibited in the previous decades. A two-minute Google search would have informed this CNN non-journalist all they needed to know about Trump.
Hes surprised?! Hes simply displaying his ignorance.

(8,922 posts)The problem is the cowardice of Republican politicians who are too cowardly to speak out against him or take action against him. Theyve shown over and over they wont say or do anything about him for fear of losing their own voter support. The only answer to Trump is to work on his voter support, the vast element of stupid that exists in this country. This element has proven itself to be the dumbest human beings on the planet, so its a very stubborn problem to extinguish.
Justice matters.
(6,925 posts)They are addicted to FAUX NEEUZE and hate radio.
The work that has to be done is to register and help them (to show up to vote) the over 100 million who want Biden's proposed policies and universal healthcare (not his policy but a progressive Congress one) the over 100 million who NEVER showed up to vote (and impose us their don't-care attitude: What celebs do in tabloids and on teevee is all they care about, and that needs to change).
GoodRaisin
(8,922 posts)I was responding to the OP, which I took to be about whats taking place inside the GOP now and about his voters. Republican politicians dont work hard enough to erode Trumps voter support. What support he has lost has largely come because of his own actions. The cowards in the Republican party arent doing much to cause his popularity to drop. They are just waiting for it to happen, and the straw poll indicates he could end up being nominated again.
No doubt our task is to get out our own vote. There arent many Republicans that are going to turn and vote for a Democrat. The country is too divided down ideological lines.
