I've always considered you a reasonable person, but knowing that you have bought into the hateful MAGA view of things has made me wonder. In the hope that you are somehow just not aware of what it is that you are supporting and encouraging by supporting Donald Trump, I am supplying you with some FACTS that you can check out and verify on your own internet device.
You are supporting a man who has already told you over 30,000 lies. Why would you believe anything he tells you?
You are supporting racism---misogyny---religious bigotry---homophobia---just about any form of stereotypical hatred you can imagine. I never considered you to be a mean hateful person.
You are supporting the continued coddling of the mega-corporations and super-rich who pay less in taxes than you do.
You are supporting the Trump party that has openly announced a plan to end Social Security and Medicaid within five years---or less.
You are supporting a person who knew he had verifiably lost reelection, yet raised millions of dollars from folks like you with his bogus ""Stop the Steal" grift.
You are supporting a person who most of this nation considers a TRAITOR who instigated the shameful insurrectionists who invaded and defiled the US Capitol on 1-6-21.
Finally, you are supporting someone whose dishonesty, vulgarity, greed and cruelty defy everything you were taught was good and true and decent.
Is this REALLY the "new you" or are you still the person your parents hoped you'd be?

(6,549 posts)What I have found out is:
1) Logic doesn't work.
2) Facts don't matter.
3) They don't care if they screw themselves as long as "the liberals" get screwed.
4) Lies don't disturb them - AT ALL!
5) They say things that I could agree with, but then slide into the flip side.
6) When they don't like what I say, they block me, refuse to talk to me, and lie about me to mutual friends. (I have actually caught them doing this several times.)
At this point it is a waste of my time to discuss anything with them because they have their own spin on things. By limiting my time talking to them I am a happier person. I spend time talking to my nieces and nephews, most of whom are not Maga, thank goodness!

I have a relative who always sought out my opinion and input when making life decisions. Now for whatever reason, they seem to think it is me who just can't see with any clarity what Trumpism is doing to them and the country.
In my opinion, it is going to take decades, if ever, for this generation of "Jonestown followers" to avoid the paper cup, hopefully.
This next election will be life-changing.

(22,034 posts)But Im not going to bother sending them your excellent points. They are too far down the rabbit hole to be reached.
The bigger problem for these people is that their first step would be to acknowledge they have a problem and need to admit theyve been wrong.
It takes a very secure, strong or bottomed-out person to make such an intensely personal insight. I dont think these imbeciles are capable of such strength and/or weakness.
In short, why waste my time? I dont have any confidence these cultists can be rescued. Frankly, I dont give a damn about them anymore.

They hate liberals far more than they love their country.

(16,844 posts)He would say, "that fellow right there would climb a tree and lie before he would stand on the ground and tell the truth." I've known some people who were like that. It's so frustrating when you have a friend like that. I know it must be some sort of psychological disorder because I've known several people who were like that. They all share some common characteristics.
They boast about how much money they have. They don't have any, but they say they have millions stashed away somewhere. They're just serving drinks in a casino for the fun of it
They boast about how many guns they have.

Some of them have been socialized to hate and spread it from generation to generation. They believe that superiority is based on race, gender, power, religion, whatever.
Bernardo de La Paz
(48,999 posts)The interpretation of good and decent among the deplorable has degenerated to the point where they speak at conferences about "eliminating" transgenderism, which means eliminating transgenders and gender disphoric people.
The interpretation of good and decent was perverted by big money. They did it by picking the pockets of poor magats and getting them to donate to the rump and reich wing fanatics.

(3,625 posts)"I 'bought into something?' It's you that have been brainwashed by the liberal media and bought into their agenda of corrupting our kids blah blah blah blah." Cult members never like having it pointed out to them that they're cult members.
I see people here continuously discussing how to reach formerly reasonable family members-turned-MAGAt and I can only sympathize. I have relatives of that ilk but I just don't think about them. If it's a parent or sibling, neither being an issue for me, then I imagine it's not that easy. If one wants to do that, though, it seems you need to avoid using any language with accusations or negative connotations.

(16,938 posts)I feel like the people who need to read this won't, or if they read it, will not effect change. They are acting like addicts and no matter what we think or feel, they each have to hit rock bottom before they see a need to change their outlook. In the meantime, we will try to help them the best we can, accept the hurt and pain they are causing us. We will finally cut ties, and leave them to their addictive illness. If they snap out of it, maybe then we can affirm their humanity.

(138 posts)Trump did not lie..its the liberal news media that is lying, taking things out of context and suffering from Trump derangement syndrome.
Trump is not racist.. His daughter is married to a Jew and i see plenty of blacks at his rallies. And its the Democrats who supported slavery.
Less in taxes ? Why do you hate successful people? That is class warfare and envy of the rich ! You dirty commie!.
Nonsense! He wants to strengthen social security.,., he said so himself!!!
He won the election.. his is only claiming what is his.. I know this from watching FOX News and listening to Steve Bannon. Rudy Giuliani, Mike Lindell , and Marjorie T Green and dozens of other patriots say so! They cant all be wrong!
He did not institute an insurrection..That was a peaceful demonstration by patriots and the rioters were FBI agents , antifa and Democrats pretending to be Trump supporters
Trump is not vulgar.,.,just a bit of locker room talk.. he loves this country. which is more that you can say about Biden and the you libs
I am the person my parents hoped for ..that is why I wave the flag, sing the national anthem and fight the commies and those like you that hate America and despise Trump ...a real patriot!
Now i am going to put my fingers in my ears and cover my eyes so I don't have to listen to you!
Ya this is what they will say.. I know this from repeated experience!
Someone once told me this.. You cannot change their minds with facts and reason because they did not make up their minds using facts and reason but deeply held fears and prejudices..
Sad but true.
Convince me against my will, and I will believe it still!

(9,776 posts)If you look at why people leave, some of the reasons are:
They feel betrayed somehow.
They can no longer deal with the contradictions (since words are only used for effect, and bear no relation to fact, so they change daily)
They just hit rock bottom.
There are others, such as the "Gentle Persuasion" of friends and family, but they are kind of rare.
➜ Read any book on cult behavior.
Other than these, only a highly skilled therapist can help, and cult members rarely, if ever, ask for help.
I am not a therapist, but had to grab some basic understanding.
Otherwise, we are just speculating about things that don't work.
(unless the people of concern are very loosely affiliated with the cult, and to that, I say "SHOW ME ONE" )

My cousin always conservative but we got along went off the rails with trump, he wont even talk to me anymore because I have criticized trumps morality
He is a rigid catholic so I questioned how he could square up trumps morality to the catholic faith. He has cut all contact since, someone I have known for 58 years since we were in diapers. The cult of personality that the orange menace created is a rot that logical conversation is not going to fix.
To top it off my cousin has a bumper sticker on his van that says "Character Counts"
