LANSING Michigan Senate Democrats voted Wednesday to effectively repeal a 1931 abortion ban, calling the move affirmation of a voter-approved amendment to the state constitution that guarantees reproductive rights.
Michiganders have spoken, and the most urgent and pertinent part of doing the peoples work to fulfill Prop 3 is repealing the 1931 ban, said Sen. Erika Geiss, D-Taylor, referencing the fall ballot measure approved by 57 percent of voters.
The people demand it. It is the floor of what we must do, but do it we must.
Over uniform GOP objections, and in a series of 20-18 votes, the Senates new Democratic majority approved legislation that would repeal criminal penalties associated with the 1931 ban.
The House, where Democrats also hold a two-seat majority, approved the legislation last week. The bills are now headed to Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for expected signature.

(15,536 posts)But they are the minority and usually live in certain areas of Northern Michigan - you know, out in the woods where they don't have to mingle with anyone and they can play soldier by shooting up the trees.
I lived in North Carolina and I can relate to what you're saying, but having lived in more than one state I can tell you that you have to find your "people" (those who you can relate to) because there will always be pockets of these backwards people in every state. Having said that, I travelled extensively throughout the south for my job and I dare say I'd ever want to live in Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and throw in Florida just for the mere fact that I just about hate everything about that state except for their winter weather.

(57,073 posts)I detest this place, although you're correct, there sure are some good people everywhere, they are just a scant minority here & are terrified of everyone due to outrageous violent crime.
I went to MS once to resolve an out of state bank acct. Incomprehensibly stupid & ineffective. Wasted trip, other than to teach me the further south I go, the worse the stupid tends to get & the weirder the vibes. Never again!

(1,797 posts)The democrats need to do the opposite the republicans are doing in the blue states. I want to see
1. Bills to grant full rights to the LGBT community passed in our states
2. make the pills to be transgender available on the selves and at a low cost. Aka estrofem. They have a right to get it and it should be easy!
3. Codify abortion and birth control
4. House the poor and disabled
Lets show the republicans how it is done.
