It's hell on working parents, but better for kids.

We need better public awareness of how kids actually develop and learn.

A 'school schedule' is usually driven by extra-curricular activities (yeah, football rules the world!). So, in order to get those people home at decent hours, things start earlier.
However, the very people that 'get' the extra time at the 'end' of the school day are the ones that 'need' the extra time to start the school day.
The 'jocks' are NOT ADULTS! They are still growing - and need the rest time/sleep, but the school schedule is designed to make things 'convenient' for kids that don't appreciate it or take advantage of it.
This is yet another case of ignoring the 'science' and doing what is most 'convenient.'

I know the importance of adequate sleep. However, the best way to ensure that is to go to bed early enough to make that happen. You would not believe the number of families I worked with that did not have scheduled bed times for any of their children. They were literally falling asleep on the couch watching tv and being carried to bed. Odd as it sounds, putting yourself to sleep is a learned skill and like all skills practice makes perfect.
How do you know if you’re getting enough sleep?
You wake up before the alarm goes off.
If you’re dragging yourself and/or your child(ren) out of bed go to bed 15 minutes earlier the next night until you’re awake before the alarm goes off.
Rant off
This is nothing but performative bs.

Most "regular" jobs start at 7-9 AM. And then, there's the multiple swing shift jobs for many under 30 hours jobs.

As usual for America, it's a mess.

The average teen's circadian rhythms say to be alert in the evening and early night. Sleep in in the morning.

Something that's been studied a bit but there's no good answer.

California passed a law a few years ago saying high school couldn't start before 8:30 or 9:30 (I forget exactly).

My local district tried that maybe 8 years ago. The problem wasn't the teens (and their wanting to work part time after school). It was the smaller kids. Suddenly they were standing outside waiting for the bus in the dark at 6:30 am and getting let out of school at 2:30.

Teen truancy soared, because now the high schoolers were waiting for the bus after 8 am, when their parents had gone to work.

Too often we try to force norms in groups without really knowing the effects. There’s plenty of science around when school would best start that is better to follow than the status quo.

Just because older generations had to do things one way doesn’t mean we should challenge the previous ways.
