Georgia legislature's latest extremist bills

Email blast from Fair Fight Action 3-13-2023

We’ll start with the good news: Monday was a big legislative deadline in Georgia, and we’re celebrating that we successfully stopped a number of awful bills, including SB 221, the Senate’s massive omnibus voter suppression bill.

Now, we’ll get into the bad news: Throughout this legislative session, extremist lawmakers proposed one bill after another to suppress our rights and target Georgia’s most marginalized communities. Now, we’re determined to stop the remaining harmful bills as they advance toward becoming law — like SB 222, which targets election workers with new felonies and misdemeanors, HB 231 and SB 92, which are part of an effort to undo the will of voters who’ve elected pro-criminal-justice-reform District Attorneys, and SB 140, which bans gender-affirming care for trans kids.

These bills are unacceptable. Georgia lawmakers are attacking our rights, but we’re fighting back.

Fair Fight Action is on the ground working with key legislators and allied partner organizations, and we’re mobilizing university chapters and thousands of volunteers to contact their representatives to urge them to vote “no” on these bills before they come to a final vote.

This isn’t the first time we’ve witnessed legislation that undermines our fundamental rights and our democracy in Georgia, and it unfortunately won’t be the last. Leading up to another key election season in 2024, extremists are making a desperate and calculated attempt to push their conspiracy-filled rhetoric.

Instead of making laws to tackle the real, systemic issues Georgians face, lawmakers are pushing legislation that takes away access to vital healthcare and makes it harder to access the ballot box. We need laws that expand these freedoms — not the exact opposite. That’s why Fair Fight Action is working around the clock to counteract these extremist bills before they come to a final vote.
