Warning to all who live on barrier islands: Fourth NC home collapses into the sea...

(Excerpts via msn - Washington Post by Brady Dennis)

The sea has claimed yet another home in Rodanthe, N.C., a small Outer Banks community where severe erosion has caused numerous beachfront homeowners to retreat before they face a similar fate.

A home at (address) ...collapsed along Cape Hatteras National Seashore around noon on Monday, officials said. The incident marks the fourth house to collapse since early last year.

As more homes have fallen and more of the beach vanishes, dozens of homeowners in the area have been scrambling to move their houses farther from the encroaching sea -- even as they know such a costly move might only buy them so much time.

they shouldn't have built there in the first place.

Seriously - global climate change, stronger hurricanes, and sea level rise - which part do they not get?

I've not traveled an awful lot lately - used to vacation in Georgia 40+ years ago - and generally stay away from the ocean. Not sure why, because I like it but I also have a lot of respect for it.

At any rate, I really want to have more empathy for folks who live around these areas, but I'm running low. I've read so much about seal level rise there is no way I want to be anywhere close and yet these folks build monster homes right in the way. There was a song many years ago with a line, "You cannot take a river and bend it to your will", and it obviously has stuck with me. Why do they put their homes right in harm's way?

Do you feel the same about California? And hell, if you don't like the ocean, they're a hell of a lot more likely to get a tidal wave than the southern states.

I read every day about wildfires, floods, snowstorms, earthquakes, mudslides in that state and, god knows what I left out lol, but I only see people on DU slam anyone who lives in the south.

CA just FINE, but stay out of New Orleans, Key West, the Outer Banks, Charleston.

Did you ever visit Jekyll Island or Savannah? Two more wonderful Georgia destinations.

Used to go once a year when we lived in Marietta Ga. It was our dogs vacation. There was a hotel right on the beach that was dog friendly. Not fancy but right on the beach! We could walk the beach in both directions and it was very diverse. The trees were amazing.

Edit to add. We have visited all that you mentioned in your post except the outer banks. We regret not doing so. All those places are beautiful. Spent 10 years in the south and took advantage of seeing as much of it as we could.

Dad had a small plane and we would fly in, either there or somewhere nearby. The mists of memory have clouded over.

But I still remember Jekyll. I plan to go back this year.

Beautiful, as are all the barrier islands anywhere in this world.

It is beautiful there. We were fortunate to be able to visit so many areas in the south while living in Ga and NC. Also we were close enough to get to DC, Philly and Virginia. We are back home in Ca now but so glad we got to see so much of the south and east coast.

Edited to add: we were married on Tybee Island. Savannah is also a must see.

Ok, I sure will take pics and now you've made me decide where to go next lol!

The south is wonderful, and I've just recently begun exploring the Northeast. I loved DC when I visited a few years ago.

My parents were from England, so a lot of my travel as a child was international.

I want to see this country. Feel free to give me travel tips!

I lived in Brunswick from 77-80 near the inter coastal waterway and was a crabber around St. Simons
and the Hampton river. St. Simons was great and heading out to pull traps at 6:30 am had beautiful sunrises and
a lot of wild life at early morning.

We camped at the campground there in spring for many years and rode bikes all around the island. Great place. Always saw alligators in the ponds on south side of island (not near the campground.) and all kinds of wonderful birds in the wetlands area near the campground and fishing pier. We used to camp for several idyllic weeks there in late winter/early spring until ticks and humidity set in by early April.

They erode at one end, while sediment gets deposited at the other end. Everything winds up in the ocean at some point. Even without climate change, they shouldn't be built upon.

Let the sandbars return to nature: Remove the debris and create national parks.

No one should "own" the outer banks of anything.

I take my camper to a Canadian government park and enjoy my favorite waterway, leaving nothing behind. Then, the next person comes to enjoy it as well.

overturned in the George W. admin. Real estate developers can be powerful lobbyists and big donors, especially when so many people want to live on the water. Am seeing McMansions being built right on the Gulf Coast beaches now, especially in the Naples area.
